The most absurdly funny screenshots from an absurdly funny year in golf

December 08, 2021

There is an art to a proper screenshot. No, we're not talking about professionally-shot photos or pictures that go through the photoshop ringer. We're talking about literal screenshots off your computer, your phone, or even your television, which you are likely grabbing with your phone. I digress.

To take a great screenshot, you have to have a sense for the moment, which is to say you have to know when to pause a video at the right time or to hit both power buttons on your iPhone at the same time. It's serious business. There is perhaps no better screenshot sport than golf, which was proven in 2021 several times over. Whether it be a whacky rules situation, a facial expression in a post-round interview, or a shot-tracer or shot-tracker gone awry, it's clear the sport lends itself to high quality screenshot content.

After rounding up some of the best and most hilarious screenshots in golf from 2021, it became clear that 2022 has a lot of work to do to top what this last year gave us. Below you'll find the most absurdly funny screengrabs from an absurdly funny 2021 season, in chronological order. Shoutout to everyone who hit me up on Twitter (@cpowers14 in case you aren't following) with your favorite screenshots from the year, and I hope I was able to include many of them here.

Bryson DeChambeau's wind-blocking umbrella

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-bryson-umbrella.png

Take yourself back to this moment last January. You were probably thinking "wow, Bryson content really can't get any more hilarious than this." Boy did you think wrong.

Tom Watson's upside down headphones

Still not a damn clue what's going on here.

Mark Hubbard tries new putting style

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-mark-hubbard.png

When in doubt, pinky out.

Bend it like Brooksy

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/1/210129-brooks-koepka.png

Amazingly, this driver lived to tell the tale

Patrick Reed scoops up embedded ball at Torrey Pines

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-patrick-reed.png

If a screenshot was worth a thousand words...

Borat threatening to jump in the pond at WMPO if Jordan Spieth made birdie on 17

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-spieth-borat.png

I remember this being the first moment in 2021 where I thought "OK, wow, sports are officially all the way back." Jordan Spieth sending the crowd into a frenzy on Saturday at the WMPO and Borat threatening to jump in the pond on 17 if he made his 30-foot birdie putt just felt different. Spieth did make the putt, Borat did not jump into the pond, however

Brooks Koepka replying to the haters post WMPO win

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-brooks-koepka.png

We have no idea if he was actually replying to the haters but there's a decent chance he was replying to the haters.

Dustin Johnson nearly kills volunteer at Saudi International

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/2/210205-dj-drive.png

Hand down, man down Jeff Van Gundy.

Hunter Mahan's mullet

The poor guy finally had a good round last February and all he got in return was a roast session over his hairstyle. For shame.

Francesco Molinari's cold top

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-francesco-molinari.png

Happens to the best of 'em.

Maverick McNealy watching his fate be decided at Pebble Beach

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-mav-mcnealy.png

Mav is getting that first dub in 2022. Book it.

Jason Day searching for his golf game at Bay Hill

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-jason-day.png

Sorry, that was uncalled for.

Bryson's bomb

Once again, in this moment, you were probably thinking "OK, no WAY Bryson content could get any better than this, right?" Wrong again!

Jordan Spieth hits into Rory Sabbatini at The Players

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-rory-sabbatini.png

Luckily, as Spieth said himself, he's one of the few people Rory Sabbatini actually likes

Collin Morikawa's ball safely finds the 17th green at Sawgrass

Still waiting for this meme to go mainstream, or, should I say, meme-stream.

Bryson's top

Guy's got all the shots.

Rory McIlroy's ball finds a backyard pool at the Match Play

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-rory-pool.png

To this point, this moment was quite symbolic of Rory's season. Fortunately, he changed that narrative quickly.

GimmeGate

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-na-dj.png

Imagine even attempting to explain what's happening in this photo to a non-golf fan?

Billy Horschel takes an all-time spill at Augusta National

The white pants, not the white pants!

Si Woo Kim, Charl Schwartzel botch handshake

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-si-woo.png

Secondhand cringe like you read about.

Woosie takes a seat

Big old-man energy.

The bow

Good point, Subaru Outback Steakhouse.

Daniel Berger keeps watchful eye on Patrick Reed in the woods at Harbour Town

Daniel Berger. A silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

John Daly's PGA warm-up is a vibe

Breakfast of champions.

The eye roll seen 'round the world

Thinking about the chain of events this eye roll has since set off is pretty wild, man.

Phil Mickelson in the arena

Insert "are you not entertained" reference.

Bryson jumps into camera frame during Brooks interview at U.S. Open

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-bryson-brooks.png

A very real and very dumb thing that happened that you probably completely forgot about.

Phil and Kelley watch Jon Rahm hit balls before U.S. Open is decided

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-phil-kelley.png

Wholesome content alert!

Spectator swipes club from Rory's bag … in front of Rory

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-rory-fan.png

Hey, Harry Diamond, wake up!

Tyrrell Hatton flips off someone or something at the Open Championship

As Kyle pointed out in another tweet, this was during a run of three straight birdies for Hatton, which is extremely on brand.

Royal St. George's greenkeeper Paul Larsen becomes folk hero

Legend.

Jordan Spieth arrives on Sunday with his putter in hand

It *almost* worked.

A cursed image

NOPE.

Nelly Korda nearly drains eagle, rules chaos ensues at Solheim Cup

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-nelly-korda.png

This would be perfect for an "images that precede unfortunate events" golf account that I've yet to start. Please don't steal that idea.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat, waiting on a potential playoff at the BMW PGA, chatting and chipping

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-kiradech-aphibarnrat.png

Probably ordering a new pair of Yeezys.

Bryson wrecks woman's shin with his first drive at Ryder Cup

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-bryson-shin.png

That was the only possibly way this was going to go.

Jordan Spieth's wizardry

Still such a shame this shot didn't mean a damn thing.

Harris English's putter grip

No need to mess with a good thing. (Narrator: Harris was forced to mess with a good thing).

Brooks and Bryson hug it out

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211207-brooks-brysonhug.png

Unfortunately, as these two have since confirmed, this hug was a lot like when your mom made you and your little brother hug after fighting each other over the remote back in the day in that it was forced AF and you still hated each other for the time being.

Brooks realizing what time it is during DJ's riff

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/211206-brooks-dj.png

The most "oh sh-t, it's going to be that kinda party" face in history right there (here's the clip for reference).

Rory's ripped shirt

Just when you thought the golf season was winding down, Rory went full Hulk on his Nike Dri-fit. What a year in screengrabs. Your move, 2022.
