Ben Rector, Charles Kelley combine to create the prettiest song ever about missing a golf cut

February 06, 2023

Ben Rector and Charles Kelley put on quite a show at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. They also played a little golf.

The pair of singer-songwriters were part of the celebrity contigent playing at Pebble—and losing to Aaron Rodgers and his questionable handicap—but we're focused on the song they performed during Thursday's first round. Because it has to be the most beautiful song ever written about such a sad subject: missing the cut.

Thanks to Joel Dahmen's caddie, Geno Bonnalie, for capturing this minute-long ditty that's both touching and funny:

Just beautiful. Heck, we'd buy that single. Then again, we're biased because we're big fans, especially of Rector, whose song "Sunday" is the theme song for ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball (and should be the theme song for Sunday golf on the PGA Tour).

Of course, technically, none of the amateurs made the cut this week after high winds caused suspensions of play and a Monday finish for only the tour pros. That's a shame in particular for Kelley, the Lady A member who would have made the three-round cut with partner Kevin Kisner at 17 under.

And Rector and Dahmen were right there at 15 under. So good playing, guys. Both on and off the course. Let's hope there's a reunion and a follow-up tune next year. Maybe something about sandbagging? Just a thought.
