The Masters: Saturday's Birdies and Bogeys

Birdie: Jordan Spieth

There is much on the line for the 20-year-old Sunday, most importantly the chance to become the youngest Masters champion in history and also the first rookie to win a green jacket since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979. But to get into position to make such history, the 20-year-old Texan needed a day like Saturday where he shot a no-nonsense two-under 70 to grab a share of the lead at five under with Bubba Watson after starting the day four strokes back. If Spieth has reason to smile Saturday night, it will be recalling the impressive approach shot he hit on the par-4 14th, his ball landing gently to the left of the hole and trickling to within a foot for a tap-in birdie. Bogey: Bubba Watson

First, the good news, which is he ended the day tied for the lead in the Masters. But for a player who began the day with a three-shot lead and saw it expanded to five after an eagle on the second hole, Saturday will go down as a lost opportunity. After going 296 holes without a three-putt, the 2012 Masters champion did so twice on the day, and lost his outright lead for a second time with a bogey on the 16th. He'll have a chance to erase it all should he recover and win Sunday, but if the third round proved anything, it's that it won't be easy.-- *Sam Weinman Follow: @SamWeinman

Bogey: Rory McIlroy

The damage was done a day earlier, when McIlroy shot 77 to earn the first tee time out of the blocks Saturday morning. But on a day when McIlroy could have taken advantage of benign early conditions to post a low number, he shot a modest 71 and got outplayed by his marker, Augusta National member Jeff Knox. To be fair, Knox's 70 was essentially a causal round, and he has the luxury of playing Augusta National often. But then again, McIlroy has the luxury of being Rory McIlroy. -- S.W.

He has had a standing invitation to play in the Masters. Well, sort of. The 51-year-old Augusta National member -- who sports a +2.2 handicap index -- has been the club's designated marker for more than a decade, pressed into service when the number of golfers who make the cut falls on an odd number (this year it was 51). Having played in past years with Ernie Els and Bubba Watson, Knox was paired Saturday with Rory McIlroy and proceeded to best the two-time major champion by one stroke. "I thought he was going to be nice and three-putt the last and we would have a halve," McIlroy joked. "I don't think I've seen anyone putt the greens as well as he does around here." -- R.H.

Birdie: Lee Westwood

It might be a case of too little, too late for Westwood. Still, after collecting birdies on all four par 5s Saturday (he made only one the previous two days) to post a third-round 70, the 40-year-old Englishman stayed within striking distance of the leaders finishing three shots back of Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson. The last four years Westwood has finished T-11 or better at Augusta, including a runner-up showing in 2010 and a T-3 in 2012. "Augusta is one of those places where I feel like I can get around," Westwood said. "And I felt like I know how to get around here, even if I'm maybe not on my game." Capturing his elusive first major championship will take some Sunday magic, and maybe a little help from the others on the leader board, but it's not out of the question. -- R.H.

Bogey: Adam Scott

More so even than 36-hole leader Bubba Watson, Scott was among the halfway contenders who seemed best equipped to emerge from Saturday unscathed. Instead, Scott struggled right from the start -- finding the fairway bunker with his opening drive, then three-putting the first green. It didn't get much better. Scott played the front nine in four over and ended the day with a 76, six shots off the lead. For a player who has made a habit of remaining relevant on the weekends at majors, Scott's third round was still a frustrating example of how rarely he has been able to hold it all together. -- S.W.

Birdie: Rickie Fowler

How do you score at Augusta National? It never hurts to birdie all four of the par 5s. Fowler did that on his way to a Masters career-best 67, which vaulted him up the leader board and earned him a trip to Butler Cabin for an interview with CBS' Jim Nantz. Birdie: Matt Kuchar

For a third consecutive week, Kuchar will find himself in contention on Sunday. For a third straight year, he also has a great chance to take home a green jacket. Kuchar hopes the third time is the charm for both streaks. His Saturday 68 displayed his all-around talent, including a brilliant -- and very bold -- pitch shot from behind the 15th green to set up a birdie. "Rembrandt couldn't have painted that!" exclaimed CBS' David Feherty. Perhaps, but Kuchar is more concerned with writing a happy ending and capturing a first major title. -- A.M.

Complaining about a TV feed going out for a few minutes is the height of first-world problems. But still . . . this is the Masters! Viewers from various parts of the country got to stare at this lovely screen instead of watching the final group playing the fourth and fifth holes. Order was restored after a 20-minute delay, and golf returned, but it seemed like an eternity to those sitting through it. At least, it didn't happen on Sunday. Now that would be a real disaster. -- A.M.

Birdie: Miguel Angel Jimenez

It's tough to root against a guy like Jordan Spieth, but if there's one guy who could actually succeed in splitting opinion, it's Jimenez. The cigar-smoking, wine-drinking, aviator-wearing 50-year-old played his way into the top five after a six-under 66. He made just one bogey all day, and with those ahead of him looking shaky late Saturday, it could be Jimenez, not Spieth, writing his name into the Augusta National record books as the major's oldest ever winner on Sunday.-- *Luke Kerr-Dineen Follow: @LukeKerrDineen
