There is no greater pain in golf, short of accidentally smacking your ankle with your putter, than a lip-out. They haunt dreams. They ruin marriages. They arrive without warning and leave nothing but heartache in their wake. But don’t take our word for it, just ask Alex Fitzpatrick, the little brother of 2022 U.S. Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, who lipped out a putt FOR 59(!) while on a buddies trip at Streamsong this week. Absolutely brutal. Pure spite from the golf gods. When we talk about how much lip-outs suck, most of us mean burning an edge while trying to save bogey on the 7th. Getting robbed of a milestone 59 by the fickle whims of physics, well, that’s not just a bad break, it’s downright cruel.
We're told Alex went 28-32 at Streamsong Red, which included an ace on the eighth hole (!), nine birdies, an eagle and a lone bogey. That's good enough for the new course record at the Coore and Crenshaw-designed Red course, ranked 20th on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public list.
That said, Fitzpatrick won’t complain too much. The Sheffield-born pro graduated from Wake Forest, watched his brother win at Brookline, and made his professional debut at the Irish Open all in the span of a few weeks this summer. That’s a pretty good year right there … though it’s hard to argue that a 59 wouldn’t have made it just a teensy, eensy bit better.
