Why We Like It
- The SMS Pro continues Edel’s tradition of customizable wedges, but on this updated version, a 25-gram weight is used in place of three screws. Those with an over-the-top swing will want more weight in the heel to promote the face staying closed at impact. If you tend to pull wedge shots, the weight goes in the toe.
- A new groove pattern adds three more grooves depending on the loft for more spin.
- In addition to the updated groove pattern, Edel continues its use of cross-hatch laser etching to increase surface roughness to promote added greenside grab.
- CNC milling ensures consistent sole geometry on each wedge as opposed to hand polishing.
- Four new grinds provide ample options for playing conditions and swing type.
- Low-, standard- and high-bounce options are available.
- 10 options (48-60 degrees), 4 grinds, 1 finish

It feels heavy, but I still received great feel and feedback on most shots. Hit a lot of greens with this club. Very impressed.

It would be fun to play around with the weights to get it dialed in. Performance wasn't exceptional, but I could hit just about every shot around the green. One of the better wedges out of the sand. Good distance control. Felt very confident I could get the ball out every time.

Small, extra groove on bottom of the face inspires confidence. Full shots had good trajectory. I was able to flight the ball fairly high. Clubhead seemed to dig into sand a little more, which is good for firm bunker shots.

Average performance. I want more of an excavator out of the sand and this felt a bit light. Wasn't doing much to help me. Required a lot of precision around the green.

I found it pretty easy to use from the sand. It's not a trainer, so you must have some skill out of the sand, but you can manipulate shots. That's tougher to do on greenside shots because it's so thick and heavy. Sound and feel was a little better than average.

Feel on full shots was pretty standard. Around the green the larger head offered a lot to use, but little forgiveness. Ball seemed to run out a lot. Functional out of the sand with firmer feel.

Out of the sand, this club was fantastic! Produced high and low sand shots, and I've never been able to hit it high out of the bunker. Versatile greenside performance on bump-and-run and open-faced shots.

Out of the bunker, it’s a tank with decent distance control. You'll get out with no problem. Greenside? Same thing. You’ll have a manageable putt left.

Molly

Not as forgiving on full swings as I expected, even though the clubhead always felt like it released through the ball. Around the green you didn’t have to force anything. It’s utilitarian. Nothing great, nothing bad. A little on the heavy side, although some golfers might be drawn to that.

A lot going on with the design but, oh boy, when you hit the club it's money! I wanted to keep hitting full shots because I couldn't miss anything. Feels like each groove comes into play. If you want a little check on a 90-yard shot, I feel like this can do it.

The bounce is really interesting. The milling almost makes it look like the sole has grooves on it. It cuts through the grass really nice. Solid, soft face. If you want to have a little SWAG to your wedge, this has some personality to go with it.

Felt hard. Ball was gone before the face could grab and put some spin on it. Worked through the sand cleanly. Better on longer shots than shorter ones. Crispness played a little better.

Very good distance control on full and less-than-full shots. I felt like I could go from 95 yards to 87 yards comfortably. There was a lot of control around the green, too, and it was easy to put a ton of spin on short shots.

Might be one of the spinniest wedges out of the sand I've ever hit. The sole design looks as if it would be for someone who likes to lean the shaft forward quite a bit. It would be tough to hit a high pitch shot off a tight lie.

This has a really creative look to it with the weight insert in the cavity. The smaller head and face promoted a more concentrated swing that resulted in better contact on longer shots.

The flat grind on the sole made it play great from tight greenside lies, especially chip shots. The transition angle on the trailing edge of the sole was also helpful in laying the face open for flops and short sand shots.

Feels nice and smooth around the green. The ball is going to land where you want it to. Flop it once or twice and you know you can do it every time. Not as predictable out of the sand, but the ball still came out. Very smooth through the grass on full swings.

Spin rate and distance was lower on full shots, but it performed pretty well around the green. I was able to hit the ball low and high. Interacted with turf pretty well. Looks like it has a variable sole on it so it was able to cut through the turf easily.

Really cool looking club with the screw and plus sign on the back of the club. Looks high-tech. It seemed to fly higher and farther on full shots, which I loved. I would take 14 of these. Tougher, more rugged feel on center hits than toe or heel hits. When you put a good swing on it, the ball goes far. Not the most forgiving wedge. One redeeming quality was that I could hit a lot of bump and runs with it. Couldn't get it to check up at all.

Tighter-spaced grooves mean more groove edges on the ball for increased spin but with a lower, more controllable launch.
The offset groove-in-groove design creates spin when opening the face.
A new face blast provides extra bite on partial shots, especially out of the rough or wet grass when you need surface roughness and friction to prevent the ball from sliding up the face.

Most everyday players use cavity-back irons that are lighter weight and more forgiving. Cleveland believe golfers should use cavity-back wedges, too.
The larger, cavity-back design minimizes the loss of ball speed on mis-hits. In other words, they are uber forgiving.

Cleveland uses a proprietary steel alloy that features a tighter grain structure for a softer feel. It also saves six grams.
In its raw state, the alloy has the benefit of not rusting over time as other steel alloys tend to do, preserving the look and performance of the grooves.
The ZipCore material in the hosel saves weight, some of which is moved low and toward the toe where golfers tend to it hit. The rest of the saved weight is used to make the hosel longer and wider to increase forgiveness.

To promote a slightly lower, more controllable ball flight, the SM10 line features shorter hosel lengths and a smaller-head profile to create a progressive center of gravity in the 46- through 52-degree lofts.
Tour-player feedback resulted in shifting the center of gravity on those lofts slightly closer to the center of the face for a solid feel and to reduce a draw bias.
By using longer hosel lengths and thicker toplines in the higher lofts (54 degrees and up), Vokey was able to shift the center of gravity up (for a lower trajectory) and slightly forward, which enables the face to square more easily.

Wedges are nothing without spin. The grooves are produced using a CNC milling process and feature a new face blast to help improve performance in wet conditions.
For versatility, Cobra went back in time and updated the popular “notch” grinds in the high-lofted wedges based on the old designs made by short-game guru Phil Rodgers. The progressive-notch design allows the contact area in the heel to glide through faster when opening the face on the 58- and 60-degree models.
The wedges are manufactured from 8620 carbon steel using a metal-injection-molding process that produces tighter manufacturing tolerances, reducing the need for hand polishing that can lead to inconsistencies.

By altering its manufacturing requirements, Wilson was able to produce a groove design with a steeper angle in the groove. That leads to less loss of spin from the rough and wet conditions while reducing the chances of the dreaded flyer.
The direction of the face milling was changed from being concave up to concave down. This makes the mill lines perpendicular to the club path on open-faced shots, leading to increased interaction with the ball for spin retention.
A Garnet blast is applied to add microscopic peaks and valleys to the face that help dig into the cover of the ball on chip shots for increased spin.
