Why We Like It
- The two-piece design features a pocket low in the head. This concentrates mass higher in the club, raising the center of gravity for a penetrating flight and the kind of control needed to flight shots or attack tight pins.
- A new 17-degree groove angle has tighter pitch spacing to promote more groove-edge contact. This produces consistent spin across a variety of lies.
- The grooves and a deep cross-hatch laser pattern across the face combine to generate additional friction for maximum control.
- Five grind options are available: the S, T, C, W and the new X grind that’s back by popular demand. The X grind (available in the 54-, 56-, 58- and 60-degree models) has a higher bounce for improved shot-making capability.

Hot List testers noted exceptional performance: high, floating, spinning shots were automatic and the chamfered/widened sole glided through turf for buttery greenside work. Universally praised for versatility—open it for flops, play square for low checkers—plus lively bunker launch, strong stopping spin, and reliable distance control. Clean, compact looks (matte black/gunmetal) and forgiving mishit correction made it an up‑and‑down machine. One caveat: a few testers wanted a heavier, more substantial feel at impact.
Hot List panelists observed a highly responsive wedge with a trampoline-like full‑shot feel, excellent greenside touch and spin, and effortless bunker pop. The widened hosel sole makes opening the face easy, expanding shot versatility (high/low, open/square). Compact, target‑oriented head rewards workability and creativity; gunmetal finish/dark shaft boost confidence. Consistent full‑swing dispersion and strong performance from tight lies. One drawback: limited forgiveness on off‑center strikes, which can come out low and short.
Hot List panelists observed strong, predictable spin and control on full shots and around the green, with high, floating trajectories and reliable check‑and‑stop. A chamfered sole and balanced head produced smooth turf interaction and easy manipulation for flops, chips and bunker play; sand contact was described as grabbing like “sandpaper” for quick-stopping shots. Soft, muted feel and useful distance gapping make it a versatile, do‑everything wedge. A few testers noted occasional digging/inconsistent sand interaction.
Hot List panelists observed consistently excellent spin and distance control, with spot-on proportions and head stability through impact plus useful heel relief for versatile greenside shots. They praised the clean look (extra face lines, matte black finish), high-arcing full shots, soft predictable feel, sharp turf and sand interaction, and strong mishit correction that inspires confidence for scoring. One caveat: the lighter head can make bunker shots require more effort.
A Skeptic’s Guide To New Golf Equipment
From the Manufacturer
Callaway Opus SP
Introducing the all-new Opus SP with Spin Pocket™ Construction. Tour-preferred shaping with a higher center of gravity for more spin and precision. A re-engineered 2-piece construction head design strategically reshapes mass to optimize CG locations. The Spin Pocket redistributes weight higher, raising the CG, and promoting a lower, more penetrating launch. The result is more spin and enhanced control, especially when you need to flight shots or attack tight pins. The most advanced face in OPUS history. A new 17° groove angle with tighter pitch spacing delivers more groove edge contact for more consistent spin across a variety of lies. Combined with a deeper cross-hatch laser pattern across the face, Spin Gen 2.0 produces enhanced friction for more bite and stopping power on all types of approach shots.
