Good news: Disney just announced a new ‘Mighty Ducks’. Bad news: Disney just announced a new ‘Mighty Ducks’

December 11, 2020

Thursday was a BIG day in the ever-widening world of Disney. As part of their 2020 Investor Day presentation, the media megalodon announced 10 new Star Wars series (including the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’), 10 new Avengers properties, a gritty ‘Toy Story’ origin story starring Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear, four more seasons of ‘Always Sunny’ (oh, you forgot Disney owns Fox now?), and of course, the biggest bang of them all:

'The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers'

OK, so the good news: Coach Bombay is back! The maybe-good-maybe-bad-depending-on-your-tolerance-for-non-stop-quips-and-sarcasm news: Lauren Graham (of ‘Gilmore Girls’ fame, don’t pretend like you haven’t seen it) is joining the cast. The bad news: We didn't see a single damn Flying V in that whole trailer.

The rest looks like a mixed bag. First of all, these new purple sweaters don’t hold a candle to those classic greens.

Second, the early beats seem to be about how youth sports have spiraled out of control at the hands of crazy, Glory Days-grasping parents, which should really resonate with hockey dads (JK!)

Finally, you have to ask it: Do kids really care about hockey in the year 2021? We know the arrested-development ‘90s man-children will be tuning in, but can Disney tap into a whole new generation of pucks reverence without the likes of Kariya and Selanne out there tearing it up for real? Call us skeptical.

All that said, there’s new ‘Mighty Ducks’ happening, and that alone is worth a quack or two.
