Danny Willett

With a bogey-free 67 to win his first major title, Willett played flawlessly on Sunday. As for his attire, well, it was solid if not quite as spectacular. There’s nothing entirely wrong dressing all in white, but when you do it at Augusta National, it can leave a player looking like he’s wearing the caddie jumpsuit. Of course, Willett didn’t exactly know he’d be winning the Masters when he got dressed that morning.

Or did he? When Willett removed the white top on the 18th green before finishing his round, revealing his green shirt, it hinted that he was “prepared” to potentially put a green jacket on as well. Given how photos of him putting on his new threads will live forever, it was a very smart play to take off the white jacket.

Rory McIlroy

Rory had one of the strongest wire-to-wire scripts in the field. Grounding each day’s outfit in gray created nice consistency, and his pops of color were organized to create a theme without feeling overly matched up. The Internet was buzzing about the tight fits, but they seemed to suit Rory well. Nike made a very strong statement on all of its staff guys, but Rory particularly stood out.

It was pretty chilly during the mornings in Augusta, and we saw several players layer up with quarter-zip pull-overs. These techier outerwear pieces far outnumbered standard sweaters. Every brand offers one in a solid color, but there’s clearly room to explore pattern and texture the way Nike did with Casey.

Don’t go sleeping on the sweater, though! A merino-wool sweater worn the right way can look just as young and modern. Exhibit A: Mr. Rose.

It’s not terribly surprising that this dude’s last name literally translates to “handsome” in English. I’ve never seen someone coordinate his sunglasses to his polo before, but I’m honestly afraid of making direct eye contact with this man so I’m letting it go. You do you, RCB. You do you.

You can spot a player with a signature look from anywhere on the course, without even seeing his face. Guess who? Horschel’s bold bottoms hit their high notes at the majors, and this year’s Masters was no exception.

It’s hard to find a better photo showing the problem that wearing a white belt can create than this one of Dufner from Thursday. His white strap cuts the Duff-Man completely in half and creates a severely disjointed look for otherwise sharp looking clothes. A simple dark belt would go a long way to smooth things out. At least his shoe game is on point.

You’ve got to love these Pink Pant-thers. Tour Pros have long used the year’s first major to break out some of their boldest looks. This year, azalea pink was clearly in full force all over the Augusta National.

Phil Mickelson

On paper, a side-tab trouser and a monochromatic palette sounds pretty chic. However, Phil’s been putting this look into play a lot lately and still hasn’t hit the right note. On Friday, the head-to-toe set-up read more silver than gray. This whole thing felt awkward, and it’s time for Mickelson to move back to the basics.

I’m all for fancy pants, it’s just that Lahiri looked like he teed it up in his pajama bottoms Saturday. The print would work pretty well in a polo, but it’s a lot of look in a trouser.

I don’t understand why Adidas can’t come up with more compelling looks for these guys. While there’s nothing overtly wrong with these scripts, they feel basic and uninspiring on two of the game’s most exciting players. There is nothing fresh about D.J.’s contrast placket or J Day’s shoulder stripe; both their colors feel flat. It’s time Adidas use these guys to up the energy in golf style rather than dressing them in the gear I saw in Golfsmith five years ago.

Darren Clarke

Style has very little to do with age and everything to do with personality and point of view. Clarke combines classic style with an updated attitude like no one else. The European Ryder Cup team is sure to be one sartorial set with this man at the helm.

We run across this short-sleeve situation at every event on tour. Not only do sweaters and quarter-zips look better than this short-sleeve over long-sleeve move, they’re much easier to manage when the weather gets warmer. And when it comes to off-the-course versatility, this look really doesn’t have much range. Wearing the compression shirt, with a short-sleeve polo with a vest just looks sloppy.
