There are many ways to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

A win obviously helps. But a handful of strong finishes (maybe with a few top fives thrown in) should be more than enough to get you there. Somehow, Jordan Spieth is No. 54 heading into this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship without a single top-10 finish this season.

How exactly? Well, he’s Jordan Spieth, of course. His best finishes this season are a pair of T-11s at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Valspar. And those almost-top-10s, along with seven other top 25s, will have him teeing off at TPC Southwind. He truly is golf’s enigma.

Somewhat forgotten to history after Jordan Spieth’s incredible Sunday bogey save on the par-4 13th hole

the last time the Open was played at Royal Birkdale in 2017 is the fact Spieth nearly aced the par-3 14th right afterward. That hole, however, was retired after the last Open (to help make room for a new practice area), with a new par 3 built that is now the 15th hole. Asked about the change during his Monday presser, Spieth sounded a little bittersweet about what’s happened. “I thought the old 14th was a fantastic par 3,” Spieth said. “I think this course has some of the best par 3s that we play in any Open Championship.” On the new par 3, which tips out to 241 yards, Spieth says from the correct tee box and correct wind, it works. But otherwise it isn’t exactly his favorite hole. “It's a really cool designed hole, but it needs to be played at the right yardage.
