This Tom Holland story about bumping into Ian Poulter walking around Augusta National with a gin and tonic is pure gold
You’re probably seeing Tom Holland everywhere right now. On TV, on billboards, in Premier League goal celebrations. Seemingly everywhere you look, the British actor’s perpetual baby face is smiling back at you, and there’s good reason for that. Next week, Tom Holland reprises his role as Spider-Man in Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which promises to be the biggest movie since America started going to the movies again. To promote that film, Tom Holland joined ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’ on Thursday, but instead of talking about web-slinging, the conversation turned, as it often does, to golf. Check it out.
The whole segment starts with Holland talking about his charity designed to shed light on lesser-known charities. You should watch that just because it’s good and nice. Then Meyers brings up Holland’s well-documented golf obsession. There’s talk about what Holland likes about the game (it helps him "switch off") and how the low-risk activity pleases studio execs (“I don’t think they realize how much drinking is involved in golf,” Holland says), but the rubber really meets the road when the subject of the 2021 Masters comes up, where Holland was just one of a few thousand VIPs on the grounds.
“I meet actors all the time, so it’s something that I’m not that impressed by. But if I meet athletes, mate, it blows me away,” Holland explains. “We’re on the 10th tee watching Tony Finau tee off, and Ian Poulter just rocks up, gin and tonic in hand, and honestly it was the highlight of my year ... Just getting all the juicy golf goss … he definitely had a few gin and tonics, I’ll tell you that.”
My oh my, to be a fly on that pine straw. Needless to say, that would NEVER happen at a typical Masters with 50,000 fans swarming the grounds, but big ups to Holland for giving us a glimpse at how the other half watches golf. Now if you’ll excuse us, we have a G & T calling our name ...
