Ryder Cup 2021: Jordan Spieth may have just suffered the worst lip-out known to mankind
On Friday, Jordan Spieth pulled off some serious sorcery with an incredible chip shot at Whistling Straits. On Saturday, Whistling Straits pulled off some serious sorcery on Spieth with one of the most brutal lip-outs you'll ever see in golf.
Spieth, playing alongside Brooks Koepka in the afternoon fourball session, was in desperate need of a momentum-swinging birdie in their match against the formidable Spanish duo of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia. He appeared to be on track to get exactly that at the par-3 12th, where he took dead aim at the back right pin and left himself with less than 15 feet for birdie. Rahm and Garcia, meanwhile, both found the right greenside bunker, Rahm eventually getting up and down for par.
That cleared the stage for Spieth, who hit a perfect putt that, quite literally, went in the hole and somehow didn't actually go in the hole. Behold, the worst lip-out in the history of mankind:
That video actually doesn't even do the lip-out justice. Here's a closer look at the ball doing a full 360, think about going in again, and then just hang there:
Honestly, no matter which side you are rooting for this week, as a golfer this is legitimately sickening to watch. Revolting, even.
Had that putt fallen, Spieth and Koepka would have halved the match with Team Spain. They went on to win the 13th hole, squaring it up. We'll see how the match shakes out, but that lip-out could be the deciding factor in a full point or a halve.
