Presidents Cup 2022: Justin Thomas' first mistake of the week looked really, really painful

September 25, 2022

Golf Digest's Shane Ryan declared on the eve of the 2022 Presidents Cup that Justin Thomas has seized the title of 'Captain America.' For one thing, the artist formerly known as that, Patrick Reed, has taken his talents to LIV Golf. For another, Justin Thomas doesn't lose in these team events.

That has literally been the case this week as Thomas and buddy Jordan Spieth combined for a perfect 4-0 record over the first three days. And playing solo on Sunday, JT jumped out to a quick two-up lead against Si Woo Kim. But he also finally made a mistake at Quail Hollow—and a rather painful one at that.

Thomas did something every golfer has done at some point. After hitting a bunker shot on No. 5, he tried knock the sand out of his shoes by tapping them with his club, and, well, he missed. Here's the slow-motion of his anguished reaction:

Pain, indeed. That hurts. I mean, that really freaking hurts. Especially if you hit the ankle bone on the inside of your foot. Or the shin. God forbid you hit the shin. Ouch.

In any event, Thomas toughed it out and continued playing. But Mr. Red, White and Blue just may have a bit of a black-and-blue later.
