The Portland State coach who offered to buy everyone a beer if they came to Saturday’s game ended up footing a $14,000 bar tab

September 22, 2021

Last week, we brought you the story of Bruce Barnum, head football guy at Portland State University. Barnum was bummed about attendance at recent Vikings home games, so he decided to spike the Gatorade cooler so to speak. Come to Saturday’s game against Western Oregon, he told the good folks of Portland and beyond, and I’ll buy you a beer.

Judging by the bar tab, the good folks of Portland and beyond took him up on the offer.

That was the damage at Barny’s Beer Garden, located at PSU's Hillsboro Stadium, after Saturday’s 21-7 victory over Western Oregon. 786 Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPAs. 1260 Coors Lights. 2064 brews totaling $14,448. And Barnum, like the true hero he is, stepped up and signed on the dotted line. Boom. Instant legend.

There’s two very important lessons in all this. 1. If you’re going to be a man/woman/human of your word, mean your words. 2. Never, and we mean NEVER, write checks with your mouth that you can’t cash. Hopefully Barnum was prepared and cleared this with the missus and the accountant before leaving his tab open, but if not, the next one’s on us, coach. It’s the least we can do.
