These Guys Are Good
PGA Tour pro played a shot off the cartpath in his socks and Golf Twitter had questions
It was a day on the golf course that Mackenzie Hughes would like to forget about. But the Canadian still produced a shot people will remember.
An opening 77 has Hughes near the bottom of the Mexico Open leaderboard. Still, the short-game wizard provided one highlight. One odd-looking highlight, that is.
On the par-5 sixth hole, Hughes went long and left with his second shot finishing on a cartpath. We've seen plenty of guys hit off the hard surface before—Phil Mickelson, of course, loves these shots—because it allows a golfer to get more spin on the ball. But what made Hughes' shot so unusual was that his ball was resting on a drain in the middle of the path.
Oh, and he took his shoes off to play it. That's right, his shoes. Have a look for yourself:
Interesting shot—and a nice result! Although, unfortunately, he couldn't convert the birdie putt during his rough day. So what the heck was going on here with the shoeless shot? Needless to say, that's what most of Golf Twitter was asking.
Some more astute fans pointed out that Hughes would get a better feel for the ground in his socks. And that spikes—especially metal ones—give you a more unstable feeling on pavement. Makes sense to us. Think about that spikey feel you get—not to mention that clanking you hear—when you walk on a cartpath in your golf shoes.
No one asked Hughes what he was thinking after. Again, because he shot 77. So next time you face a shot from the cartpath, keep that in mind. Actually, don't, because you probably don't get your clubs for free like these guys. Anyway, you see something new on the PGA Tour every day.
