Good news, golf fans! PGA Tour mic'd up segments look to be expanding to the driving range

February 23, 2023

As much as 2022 will be remembered for the PGA Tour and LIV Golf causing a rift among both professional golfers and golf fans, 2023 has provided at least one unifying thing that nearly all followers of the sport can agree on: mic'd up segments with players.

Kudos to CBS for making this happen at several early events—and for at least a few players for playing along. We've gotten to enjoy the musings of Max Homa at Torrey Pines, Keith Mitchell at Pebble Beach, and Collin Morikawa last week at Riviera. And on Thursday, we got more candid insight from a golfer—only while he was on the driving range.

PGA Tour Live got Camilo Villegas to pop the AirPods on while he practiced for his opening round at the Honda Classic. And, predictably, the results were also delightful.

In a five-minute segmant, the 2010 champ talked about everything from his morning routine that includes taking a cold shower(!) to help wake up, to the swing changes he's working on, to how much players check pin sheets and weather forecasts on the eve of tournaments. Have a look—and, more importantly—a listen:

Of course, Villegas was also asked about PGA National's notorious "Bear Trap" (holes 15-17) by Billy Kratzert and Ned Michaels. All in all, they covered a lot of ground while Villegas warmed up. If you've ever attended a PGA Tour event, you already know that the range is arguably the best spot to watch these guys, but getting to watch them stripe shots while finding out what they're thinking? Pretty darn cool.

Well done all around. We can only hope this becomes a regular occurrence. And that Villegas making the turn in dead last at six over won't scare off other golfers.
