Money Matters

It's staggering how many PGA Tour pros have earned $1 million paydays in a single week

It was a big day on Monday for Cameron Smith at the Players Championship. As headlines trumpeted afterward, the 28-year-old Australian earned the biggest payday in golf history, taking home $3.6 million for his one-stroke victory over Anirban Lahiri at TPC Sawgrass, from a purse of $20 million.

In turn, Smith more than doubled the previous largest single payday of his young and burgeoning pro golf career: $1.475 million that he claimed when winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.

Suffice it to say, it pays to be successful on the PGA Tour. Literally. Winners of any full-status tour event earn seven-figure prize money payouts that will only be increasing in 2022. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined to tour members late last year that tournament prize money will rise from $375 million to $427 million in 2022, thanks in part to increases in revenues from the new television deal that kicks in this year.

With help from the PGA Tour’s communications team, Golf Digest compiled a list of the largest paydays for every active player on tour. Smith passes Justin Thomas, the previously top money winner with his $2.7 million windfall for winning last year’s Players Championship. He’s one of 15 tour pros who have earned a payday of more than $2 million (up from 11 at the start of 2022).

Meanwhile, of the 266 golfers with some form of active status on tour (winners, top 125 on the FedEx Cup points, Korn Ferry Tour graduates, past champions, medical extensions, etc.), you might be surprised that 160 of them (60.1 percent) have earned a check for $1 million at some point during their careers.

Below is the list of all 160 active players whose largest paydays have exceeded the $1 million mark. Interestingly, not all of them are checks earned en route to victory. Louis Oosthuizen, for example, has his largest payday for his runner-up at last year’s U.S. Open ($1.35 million) rather than his 2010 Open Championship win ($1,305,593.20). Meanwhile, Lahiri earned $2.18 million for his second place finish on Monday to Smith, the seventh largest check earned in a PGA Tour event. Largest checks for something that wasn't a win are denoted in parenthesis.
