Foregone Conclusions
One bettor was 30 minutes from hitting a 16-leg NFL parlay worth $727,000 … then the Detroit Lions happened
On Monday afternoon, news broke about an intrepid NFL bettor 15-legs into an incredible 16-leg parlay. Betting the moneyline in each of the weekend’s NFL games, this brave soul stood to turn a $25 wager into a $727,000 payday if they could clear one final hurdle: The Detroit Lions.
It was then that we knew their fate.
The Lions, of course, were poised for a Monday-night showdown with their dreaded NFC North rivals the Green Bay Packers, coming off one of the ugliest losses of the Aaron Rodgers era in Week 1. BetMGM, where the bet was placed, had the Lions at +400, meaning that it was improbable—but not implausible—that Dan Campbell’s Motor City maniacs might pull off the upset. Then, lo and behold, the Lions jumped out to a 17-14 halftime lead. Suddenly we stood 30 minutes from one of the greatest parlays in NFL history. It couldn’t happen … could it?
The answer, as anyone who has been watching football for five minutes could have told you, was an emphatic no.
The Lions were shutout in the second half, giving up 21 unanswered points as Aaron Rodgers cruised for four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 145.6 passer rating. So let's all hope this poor sap hedged, because if there’s one thing every football knows, it’s to never, EVER trust the Detroit Lions.
