The Memorial Tournament is one of the most familiar sights on the PGA Tour schedule. But it will look a little different in 2021. Jack Nicklaus oversaw a significant renovation over the past year at Muirfield Village after last year’s back-to-back events—and the players will see the results this week for the 2021 Memorial.
Nicklaus added and shifted a bunch of tees, added, removed and relocated bunkers, expanded some fairways and narrowed others, added trees (yes, a course that is adding trees) and expanded, relocated and even recontoured green complexes—all large scale changes at the No. 15-ranked course on Golf Digest’s latest America’s 100 Greatest rankings. Still, the character of Muirfield Village will remain unchanged, and the Dublin, Ohio layout remains Nicklaus’ seminal layout in his esteemed design career.
The course remains one of the toughest tests of the year—a second-shot course that will challenge the game’s best this week. It’s another great field, as defending champion Jon Rahm (10-1) leads the odds board at this invitational event. Seven of the top-10 and 16 of the top-25 ranked players in the world will compete for the trophy at Jack’s event. It'll take superior approach play this week—here are the top-five players in this field over the past 24 rounds in strokes gained/approach, per Fantasy National: No. 1 Collin Morikawa (16-1); No. 2 Charley Hoffman (50-1); No. 3 Emiliano Grillo (60-1); No. 4 Stewart Cink (100-1); No. 5 Jordan Spieth (14-1). But it'll take a complete game to navigate Nicklaus' renovated, 7,500-plus yard track.
