Recovery Beers

Luka Doncic had an iconic response when asked about his 60-point triple-double in historic comeback win

December 28, 2022

With just over 33 seconds remaining on Tuesday night, the Dallas Mavericks trailed the New York Knicks by nine. It was done and dusted. Game, set, match. But you are never truly out of it when facing the New York Knickerbockers, and the Mavericks game roaring back to tie the game on a ludicrous Luka Doncic intentional-missed-free-throw-fadeaway at the buzzer.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, NBA teams were 0-13,884 when trailing by nine or more with less than 35 seconds remaining, but the Mavericks bucked the odds, eventually running out 126-121 winners in overtime. When the final whistle blew, Luka Doncic finished with 60 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 assists, completing the first 60/20 triple-double in NBA history while breaking the Mavericks single-game scoring record. Asked about his legendary performance after the game, Doncic delivered an equally legendary answer. Let’s listen.

“I’m tired as hell. I need a recovery beer.” This is what everyone loves about Luka. On his day, he can ball with the greatest to ever do it (his gamescore of 53.6 on Tuesday was the fifth highest in NBA history), but he comes across like one of the dudes. He’s got that Paul Pierce gene. He’s a little out of shape. He’s not especially quick. His recovery beverage of choice is a lager. Yet he can still go out there and hang 50 on anyone on any given night. It’s truly a pleasure to watch … unless, of course, you’re a Knicks fan.
