The Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship in the Dominican Republic holds a unique status among PGA Tour events in the 2020-’21 season: It is one of three tournaments—and the only non-major championship—that will be played twice (the U.S. Open and Masters are the others).

In other words, new champion Hudson Swafford could potentially win this tournament not once, but twice this season.

The 2020 event was originally scheduled for March opposite the WGC-Dell Match Play, it’s usual slot on the tour calendar and where it will appear again six months, but was postponed with the COVID-19 outbreak. When the re-configured 2020-’21 season was created, it returned on the schedule for the last week in September, expected to be a place to play for those not competing in the Ryder Cup. But when that event was subsequently postponed until 2021, Puntacana had the date all to itself.

Swafford won his second career PGA Tour title after shooting final-round 69 to beat Tyler McCumber by one stroke. It was a closer finish than most would have imagined as Swafford, who started the day two off the lead of Adam Long, had a four-stroke advantage with six holes to play. But stumbles on the 13th (double bogey) and 15th (bogey) saw the lead disappear entirely. Only with a birdie on the 17th and then a two-putt par on 18 did Swafford hang on for the title.

For the fall version of this event, the tournament offered full FedEx Cup points to the field. Swafford gets 500 points, along with an exemption into the Masters, PGA Championship and the Players Championship. The overall prize money payout remained $4 million, with Swafford earning $720,000 for the victory.
