Check out the crazy swing of a guy who was trying to qualify for the U.S. Open
"Swing your swing." It's a phrase you hear in golf a lot, although, probably in part to make bad golfers feel less bad about their bad swings. It's also apparently a motto by which Brett Silvernail lives his life.
Last month, the pro from Ventura, Calif., shot 68 to easily advance through a local U.S. Open qualifier in Palm Desert. And on Monday, his swing turned heads on Golf Twitter as he attempted to qualify for the field at next week's third men's major championship of the year at Los Angeles Country Club. Check out this wild move that was shared by Ryan French, AKA Twitter's Monday Q Info:
Wow. And it looks like he absolutely hammers the ball swinging that way.
Wait a minute! I've seen that move before! That's the anti-slice drill from Hank Haney that pops up on my Instagram feed every two minutes because of all the golf instruction videos I watch! But to see it being used in tournament play—with a spot in a major on the line—is pretty crazy. We haven't seen a swing this odd at such a high level since viral sensation Ho-sung Choi.
A (slightly) deeper dive into Brett's background shows he's also a coach and that he works with unorthodox instructor George Gankas. So this is beginning to make a bit more sense.
In any event, it doesn't appear like we'll see Silvernail at L.A. Country club next week as he's two over thru 12 holes at the Hillcrest Country Club final qualifying site, where 89 players are vying for only five spots. That being said, if you are fighting a slice, you might want to give Brett's swing a try. Just make sure to test it out on the range first.
