Style Watch: A review of Viktor Hovland’s bold looks at the Genesis Invitational and how to pull them off

Viktor Hovland stepped onto the range at Riviera on Friday morning sporting a pair of pants that perfectly match his fiery play as of late. The 24-year-old Norwegian wore the J.Lindeberg JL Strike Pants, a black trouser embroidered with lightning bolts. Made from stretchy water-resistant fabric, these pants are flexible enough for the course, but can also easily be paired with a white t-shirt for a casual night out. The trousers made waves on Twitter. Fans expressed their fondness for Hovland’s edgy look, convinced the fitting pattern helped him go low at the Genesis Invitational where he finished T4.
He pulled off the patterned pants by pairing them with simple black accessories and a monochromatic golf shirt to make sure the statement piece was able to shine without distraction. A contrasting black collar on the white top tied the look together with a touch of sophistication. While his second-round-look got the most attention, Hovland's entire scripting at the Genesis Invitational was one to take notes from.

On the opposite side of the color spectrum from his black-and-white lightning bolt ensemble, Hovland shined in a youthful turqoise, energetic orange-red and sophisticated green during the other three rounds of the tournament. He expertly paired each look with simple-yet-on-trend accessories with quiet shades for trousers. Each look was equal parts youthful, athletic and golf-appropriate.

European style details like a logo graphic zip closure on his first-and third-round shirts added athletic fashion elements genuine to both Hovland and his apparel sponsor, J.Lindeberg's Scandanavian roots. The sporty styling is a refreshing alternative to traditional button plackets.

Hovland's final-round look was the tamest, but the vibrant green golf shirt gave him a strong finish to the week style-wise. The simple green top was a more serious look, but paired with black pants and accessories still looked modern and fashion-forward.

As golf clothing continues to modernize, professional and casual golfers alike are beginning to wear spunkier outfits on the course. J.Lindeberg, a sportswear company founded in Stockholm in 1996, is known for pushing the boundaries of golf apparel. Their concept meshes notes of street-style with classic golf silhouettes. In addition to Hovland, Olympic gold medalist and seven-time LPGA Tour winner Nelly Korda wears the trendy brand.
