Save for later

Is it possible that Oakmont actually isn't that hard of a golf course? That all those videos of the thick rough, and slick greens and slick fairways were all a smokescreen?

Obviously, we kid. But one U.S. Open qualifier's opening hole result suggests that the famed track can be tamed. For one hole, at least.

Most golf fans might not have been familiar with Maxwell Moldovan on Thursday morning. But the 23-year-old former All-American at Ohio State quickly created the first highlight of the tournament by holing out his approach shot on Oakmont's 484-yard, par-4 first for an unlikely eagle. Have a look:

What a reaction. And what a way to start a golf tournament. According to the USGA, Moldocan is the first player ever to card a 2 on the first hole in a U.S. Open at Oakmont.

Two under after one hole? This Oakmont is a pushover, huh? Again, kidding. Maxwell bogeyed his next two holes to quickly drop back to even par. Order has been restored.
