'Cooked beyond belief': Bryson DeChambeau shows off ridiculous Oakmont rough in latest YouTube video
From what we're already hearing, and seeing, Oakmont is going to live up to its devilish reputation at next week's U.S. Open, which will mark the 10th time Pennsylvania's crown jewel will host, the most of any Open venue. In the previous nine iterations, no winner has ever shot lower than five under over four days.
That doesn't appear like it will change in 2025, especially if Bryson DeChambeau's latest YouTube video is any indication. The two-time U.S. Open winner dropped the 48-minute long vlog on Wednesday and titled it "The World's Hardest Golf Course: Oakmont Country Club."
The full video is well worth the watch, featuring some great behind-the-scenes prep work between DeChambeau and his caddie Greg Bodine, who wasn't even carrying the bag (DeChambeau used an Oakmont caddie for the video). But the clip that's already going viral is one of DeChambeau arriving to his ball at the 217-yard par-3 sixth, where he hit what he thought was a perfect 6 iron that sailed over the green and into the famed Oakmont rough. "Oh my gosh," DeChambeau says when he sees the lie. "Cooked beyond belief."
As you can see, DeChambeau wound up hitting it about as good as he possibly could have out of that stuff. His 15-footer for par came up short and he made bogey, which is going to wind up being a good score more often than not next week.
DeChambeau does a good job of really playing up the difficulty of Oakmont in the video, but don't let the man fool ya. Insanely long rough, narrow fairways and lightning fast greens sure sounds a lot like Winged Foot West, where DeChambeau won a U.S. Open handily in 2020. He'll get roughed up, no pun intended, like everybody else next week, but we're betting he'll be in the mix late on Sunday per usual.
