Stacy Lewis chose a familiar player to be her third assistant captain for the 2023 U.S. Solheim Cup team: Angela Stanford. Stanford joins Lewis’ other two assistants, Morgan Pressel and Natalie Gulbis. The four will guide the U.S. team at Finca Cortesin in Spain in September 2023. The team will complete to reclaim the Solheim Cup after a surprising loss to Europe at Inverness in 2021.
Stanford joined the LPGA Tour in 2001 and has won six times, including a major, the 2018 Amundi Evian Championship. During her career, she has competed for the United States at the Solheim Cup six times. In her last playing of the event, in 2015, she defeated Suzann Pettersen, 2 and 1, to secure the winning point for the U.S.
Stanford has experience in the assistant's role, working alongside captain Pat Hurst for Team USA in 2021. In Spain, Lewis said she is going to lean on Stanford’s numbers-based ability to make pairings.
“I’ve known Angela for a long time and I’m so happy that she agreed to work with me at the 2023 Solheim Cup,” Lewis said. “Angela has a great eye for statistics, finding the little details that go into picking the best players and making the right line-up combinations.”
Stanford is excited to participate in the team event once again and be wearing red, white and blue.
“Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the Solheim Cup, and I’m so happy to represent my country again,” Stanford said. “I look forward to the opportunity to learn from Stacy, Morgan and Natalie, and work to bring the Cup back to America!”
