In recent weeks, Rory McIlroy chose to join the fray in one of the bigger debates surrounding professional golf, sharing video showing him ramping up his swing speed to gain more distance a la Bryson DeChambeau. But then on Sunday at the Zozo Championship, where the four-time major winner decided to jump head first into another spicy controversy.

In cool and wet conditions at Sherwood Country Club during the final round, McIlroy wore a gray Nike hooded sweatshirt apparently without fear of the repercussions. He then proceeded to post his best round of the week in Southern California, making seven birdies on his first 15 holes en route to a six-under 66 that lifted him from T-36 into the top 15.

Depending on your stance on hoodies, McIlroy either callously thumbed his nose at golf convention and tradition or had the back of his European Ryder Cup pal Tyrrell Hatton. Recall that Hatton wore a hoodie during the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship earlier in the month, rolling to the title only to be chastised in some parts of the golf world. The day after Hatton’s win, Wearside Golf Club in the U.K. doubled down on its no hoodie policy.
