GOAT vs. GOAT

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills just ended this mind-blowing Patrick Mahomes gambling streak

October 12, 2022

It’s Wednesday. There was no football last night, and yet Patrick Mahomes is somehow still blowing minds. That’s because the Buffalo Bills opened as road favorites for their huge tilt against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, snapping this almost unthinkable streak. Check it out.

It’s hard to remember—with so many no-look passes, AFC West titles, deep playoff runs, and even a Super Bowl clouding our hindsight—but when Mahomes was drafted in the spring of 2017, he was far from a sure thing. He was a gunslinger project out of an Air Raid offense that had yet to produce a successful NFL quarterback. He rode the pine behind Alex Smith for the entire 2017 season. It’s almost impossible to believe the Chiefs weren’t home dogs once or twice when he finally got the starter’s nod in 2018, but the fact they weren't speaks to his immediate, electric impact.

Since then, Mahomes has gone 41 straight Arrowhead appearances as the favorite, an NFL record. That’s not too shabby. But if that record shows just how good Mahomes and co. have been over that span, it’s ending this week shows just how good Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills currently are—another cannon-armed quarterback leadning an AFC juggernaut with a homefield advantage to make even the most hardened middle linebacker sweat.

Might Vegas fall in love with Allen like they did Mahomes? Could he one day hit 42? Let’s just see how Sunday goes and take it from there. After all, you can’t take the throne if the king is still sitting in it.
