How We Do It In The Pros

Tour pro on verge of missed cut goes full Shooter McGavin, nearly pulls it off

At one over through 15 holes on Friday, Mark Hubbard was hanging right on the cut line. Turns out, one birdie in his last three holes would have got him to the weekend, and it would have secured a third straight made cut for the journeyman tour pro.

But there would be no birdie(s) for the 32-year-old on the seventh, eighth, or ninth holes at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. Instead, Hubbard ejected, making bogey at No. 7 and double bogey at No. 8 to drop to five over. On his final hole of the day, the par-3 ninth, Hubbard found the green and had 16 feet for a meaningless closing birdie.

To spice things up a little, Hubbard went full Shooter McGavin, going for the no-look "this is how we do it in the pros" putt, and he damn near made it:

If you're going to MC Hammer, you might as well do so in style. Otherwise, you're just another guy everyone scrolls past on the leader board app to check who else missed the cut. Hubbard, though, is now a social media star for at least 24 hours. It's a brilliant PIP play, really. Well, it almost was:

Seriously, could the tour have done him any dirtier here? The video is cropped so you can't even see his name, and, apologies to Mark, but the casual viewer has absolutely no idea who he is without seeing his name in the top left of the screen. And on top of it all, he doesn't even get tagged. Brutal. For everyone reading this, though, (Extreme "Fight Club" scene voice) HIS NAME IS MARK HUBBARD, and he's not afraid to go out in a blaze of fire. Here he is in January of 2021 employing the snail-pinky putting grip before MC'ing at the American Express:

No one misses cuts like @HomelessHubbs.
