Mac Jones says his girlfriend helps him run plays in the backyard. Cam Newton never stood a chance

September 08, 2021

By now you’ve probably heard that Mac Jones—national championship winner, 15th-overall draft pick, and the preferred signal caller of Jaylen Waddle and Devonta Smith—is the new starting quarterback of the New England Patriots. After a year-long flirtation with Cam Newton, who was unexpectedly cut last week, it finally feels like the Patriots have found the post-Brady reset they’ve been searching for. Whether or not Jones is NFL ready at this stage remains to be seen, but he does have a secret weapon in his locker:

His girlfriend.

That’s Jones on WEEI's Merloni & Fauria on Tuesday, revealing that his longtime girlfriend Sophie Scott isn’t just there to cheer him on, she’s literally running routes. Needless to say, Cam Newton never stood a chance.

The Patriots get a visit from the Dolphins on Sunday in what promises to be one of the most compelling matchups of kickoff weekend. Not only should it serve as an interesting AFC East barometer (have Patriots have been able to close the three-game gap the Fins established last year? How do both stack up to Buffalo?), but it will also pit Jones vs. Tua Tagovailoa in a battle of former Alabama quarterbacks.

Better find yourself a girlfriend who can beat the Cover 2 before it’s too late, Tua.
