Jon Rahm throws out first pitch at Game 4 of World Series, airmails it halfway to Albuquerque

November 01, 2023

Is anyone watching the World Series? It’s now November and the MLB season is still going. After 162 games and change, it’s all come down to the sleeper Texas Rangers vs. the dark-horse Arizona Diamondbacks in a World Series matchup that has set new record viewership lows with each passing game. The die-hards who still tuned in for Game 4 on Halloween night, however, were greeted with a treat when the world’s second-ranked golfer Jon Rahm, clad in his shiny new green jacket, took the mound at Chase Field ... and proceeded to airmail his first pitch halfway to Albuquerque.

It’s certainly not a 50 Cent- or Mariah Carey-level disaster, but it’s no Brian Harman either. In fact, in neither angle does the camera capture where the ball ends up, which is, uh, not what you want. While Rahm gets it plate-high, he bails out of this one and balloons it dead right, well outside of pretty much anyone not named Javy Baez’s chase zone. It’s not a public humiliation, but we have to admit we expected a bit more from the former Sun Devil.

The good news is that Jon Rahm isn’t done winning majors and will likely get another a chance or two to redeem himself on the mound before his career is through. The bad news is that it probably won’t be in Arizona. After Tuesday’s 11-7 loss, Diamondbacks are now down 3-1 in the series and face elimination on Wednesday. If it takes the D-Backs as long to get back to the World Series as it did the last time, Rahm will be 50 by the time the Fall Classic finally returns to the desert.
