HOW ABOUT ONE!?
The footage inside the broadcast booth during J.J. Spaun’s U.S. Open-clinching putt is absolutely electric
It’s been a few weeks since J.J. Spaun rolled in a 64-foot bomb to clinch the U.S. Open, but roars are still reverberating around golf. That includes those from the broadcast booth, where NBC’s Dan Hicks and Kevin Kisner called the action as it happened. On Tuesday, we finally got a glimpse behind the curtain as footage of the Hicks and Kiz's reaction surfaced on X, and safe to say, it’s just as electric as we hoped.
Sure beats sticking a fork in a electrical socket if you ask us.
Hicks’ “HOW ABOUT ONE!?” call was an instant classic, but it’s great to see how much genuine enthusiasm was actually behind the catchphrase. Best of all, though, was Kiz’s thumbs up. He knew it was good from about 15 feet out, holding his digit aloft as the ball tracked toward the cup like heat-seeking missile. If ever there was a broadcaster equivalent to an early walk, this was it.
Hicks and Kiz weren’t the only ones having fun though. Brad Faxon and Terry Gannon were seated just feet away and had to do everything in their power not to step on Hicks’ call with a hoot and holler of their own. Check it out.
Awesome stuff across the board. While impartiality from members of the golf media is important, this is a welcome reminder that we're fans of the sport just like you. When history dropped in Hicks and Kiz's laps, they didn’t put on a rehearsed performance, they reacted just like the fans in the gallery and on their couches at home. That may result in a few awkward moments now and then, but it’s all worth it for calls like this.
