Jason Kokrak wasn’t the golfer most fans at Colonial Country Club were pulling for during the final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge on Sunday, Texas native Jordan Spieth holding that designation. But Kokrak earned their respect by day’s end while playing the role of spoiler, holding on after a wobbly start in Fort Worth, then taking the lead for good from Spieth with a birdie on the par-5 11th hole en route to a closing 70 and a two-shot victory.

Kokrak started the day one shot back of Spieth, whose track record in the tournament was more than impressive. In eight previous starts at the Charles Schwab Challenge, which celebrated its 75th anniversary this week, Spieth had posted top-15 finishes seven times, including a win in 2016 and runner-up showings in 2015 and 2017. His worst finish is a T-32.

But Spieth struggled early, making bogeys on the second, third and fourth holes, and eventually shot a three-over 73, matching the worst score he’s ever posted in 36 rounds during the tournament.

It was the second career PGA Tour win for Kokrak, who earned his first at the CJ Cup last October at Shadow Creek. It took the 35-year-old 233 career tour starts to claim his maiden victory. He needed just 16 to grab win No. 2 and become the fourth player to claim multiple wins in the 2020-21 tour season.

With the victory, Kokrak earned the $1.35 million prize money payout for the winner. The overall purse for the event was $7.5 million.
