Cristie Kerr gets inside the cut line at the ANA Inspiration thanks to miraculous bounce (splash) on final hole

April 02, 2021

Cristie Kerr was having a brutal back nine at the ANA Inspiration on Friday—until a miraculous finish.

The 20-time LPGA winner was in contention at the year’s first major until playing a six-hole stretch in six over that put her outside the cut line when she arrived at the 18th hole at Mission Hills Country Club. Needing a birdie to move inside the cut line, she went for the closing par 5 in two only to find the pond short of the green. Or so she thought.

Thanks to a lucky skip off the water, Kerr’s ball landed safely on dry land. Check it out:

The funny thing is that all week there’s been plenty of talk about the water on the 18th hole. But it’s been focused on the water behind the 18th green that is now exposed to players since tournament officials took away “the Great Wall of Dinah” that served as a backstop keeping balls from racing over the island green.

Meanwhile, Kerr took full advantage of her good fortune. She got up and down for birdie to finish her first 36 holes at one over to make the cut on the number. Hey, better to be lucky and good.
