British Open 2025: Xander Schauffele had the best—and most honest—quote about Scottie Scheffler's dominance
Kevin C. Cox
Ahead of Sunday's final round, Rory McIlroy said Scottie Scheffler is "inevitable." After Sunday's round, Xander Schauffele summed up the World No. 1's dominance even better.
Scheffler coasted to a four-shot victory at Royal Portrush for his fourth career major title, never letting other big names like Rory and Xander think they had a chance of hoisting the claret jug. He's now won a stunning 12 times, including three majors, in the past 16 months. And he's won 25 percent of major championships since the start of the 2022 season.
There are many ways to put this historic stretch in context with stats, but it was Schauffele, who said it best after finishing T-7, seven shots behind Scheffler.
"I don't think we thought the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon, and here's Scottie sort of taking that throne of dominance," Schauffele said. "You can't even say he's on a run. He's just been killing it for over two years now."
And that's from a man who won two majors last year! That would have been well said enough, but then Schauffele added this brutally honest perspective of competing against Scottie when he's on his game.
"He's a tough man to beat, and when you see his name up on the leaderboard, it sucks for us," Schauffele said.
Hey, it takes a big person to admit that, Xander. But we're guessing if you hooked every other tour pro up to a polygraph test, they'd say the same thing.

Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is a subject of continued discussion. The event’s official name, as explained in this op-ed by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson, is the Open Championship. But since many United States golf fans continue to refer to it as the British Open, and search news around the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to utilize both names in its coverage.
