British Open 2025: Power rankings for the entire field at Royal Portrush

It’s the fourth and final men’s major championship of the 2025 season. What started with a career-defining moment at the Masters has been recently capped by a 64-foot birdie bomb at the U.S. Open. In between, the World No. 1 grabbed his first major away from Augusta National. What can we expect across the Atlantic to wrap this sensational four-part season? Most of that might be up to Mother Nature. As we prepare for Royal Portrush and the 2025 British Open, I’m modifying the Power Rankings. We are three majors into the season, and the No. 1 question I’m asking each player is …

“What have you done for me lately?”

Enough with World Rankings and the rest. Who is showing up at the Masters, the PGA and the U.S. Open? Professional golf has given us a world where only four tournaments bring all the best players together. Guess what? Then you are going to be judged by them. I’m shaking up the rankings and placing far more emphasis on the 2025 majors. Take talent combined with recent form, and that’s the basis for 1 to 156.

Looking back at the 2019 Open Championship, we saw a leaderboard littered with the best ball-strikers. There’s a lean toward them as well, but if they haven’t played a weekend in Augusta, Charlotte or Pittsburgh, they are getting knocked down. I see you Ben Griffin, and your back-to-back top-10s in majors.

Here’s your moment, now’s your time to shine. Let’s all get ready for the final full-field major event of the golf season. The 153rd Open is upon us, and we all cannot wait to try and predict the “Champion Golfer of the Year!”

Keith Stewart joined the crew from Five Clubs on Golf Channel for a special Open Championship betting episode. Watch the episode here.

Key

  • Age: Most majors are won by players in their 20s and 30s. Always good to keep track of any birthday milestones.
  • Odds to win: These are the futures odds listed for each player prior to Monday of tournament week on DraftKings.
  • Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) value: The posted price for each competitor on DraftKings.
  • OWGR/Data Golf: Let’s face the facts, the OWGR is incomplete. Jon Rahm is ranked 68th in the world. To give us a better top-line view of player performance, I included the Data Golf rankings. (Rankings are as of the Week of July 7.)
  • 2025 Major Season: How did each player fare in the first three majors of 2025? Believe it or not, 21 players in this field have made the cut in all three.
  • British Open appearances/cuts made: The number of times a player has competed in the Open, along with the number of successful cuts made. Only five men in the top 70 have not missed a cut at The Open: Jordan Spieth (11), Xander Schauffele (7), Robert MacIntyre (5), Cameron Young (3) and Thriston Lawrence (3).
  • Best Open finish: Again, another quick reference tool. Open Championship golf caters to a specific type of player. Some of these success stories may surprise you.
  • Notes: A quick summary for each player to pique or deter your interest in their chances to win or play well at Royal Portrush.

Nos. 126 and beyond

Open Championships are full of amazing qualifying stories. Amateur Richard Teder double-bogeyed the final hole in qualifying to place himself in a four-man playoff for Royal Portrush. On the third playoff hole after bombing a 340-yard drive, Teder holed out for eagle (see below) and a ticket to the Dunluce. As if holing out to qualify wasn’t enough of an accomplishment, Teder is the first player from Estonia to qualify for the Open! We should all “favorite” Teder on our leaderboards and keep track of this amazing tale from a country that has only 12 golf courses.

Nos. 101-125

Justin Hastings began 2025 as the 47th-ranked amateur in the world. The native of the Cayman Islands then won the Latin America Amateur Championship in January and earned an invite to the Masters. Hastings (below) made the cut at two PGA Tour events (Mexico Open, Puerto Rico Open) in preparation for Augusta National. He missed the cut at the Masters, but had the best score of any amateur in the field. Then at the U.S. Open, he finished T-55 to officially earn low amateur honors. Can he pull off the ultimate trifecta? I will definitely be watching this young star, who is now ranked 12th in the WAGR, as he plays in his final tournament before turning pro.

Nos. 71-100

We have six major winners lurking near the cutline: the top 70 and ties make the weekend at the Open, a favorable extra five spots over the PGA Tour. A couple of new stars are in this ranking category. Recent two-time winner Brian Campbell (below) is at No. 76, while the longest player on tour and Rocket Classic champion Aldrich Potgieter is at No. 81. Does Phil Mickelson have another major run in him, or can Dustin Johnson return to a major championship weekend? Is there a Darren Clarke or Tom Watson waiting in these rankings? Those are two prime candidates for some major magic.

Back-to-back top 25s in his last two major starts, Matt Wallace is having his finest major season since 2019. The key at Quail Hollow and Oakmont was his ability to score. The around the green acumen and putter always keep Wallace in a difficult test. When the weather goes wild in Northern Ireland, watch Wallace walk up that leaderboard.

It’s amazing how much McNealy has evolved as a player in the last year. Since a missed cut at the Open last year, McNealy has 12 top-20 finishes and hasn’t missed the cut in a major in 2025. The improved ball-striking to go along with a great recipe for another major weekend in Ireland.

Greyserman has only played in five majors, and he successfully navigated the cut in all three this year. It starts with a strong putter, great short game and aggressive driver. Look at his two rankings! Four top-25s in his last five starts, Greyserman can make a “major” career move this week.

Berger is having a heck of a ball-striking season. Off the tee and on approach, during the majors he has been excellent. I expect that level of ball-striking again. Berger had the flatstick going at Augusta and Oakmont. If he can gain a couple strokes on the greens at Portrush, he will do way more than just make the cut.

Seriously, your guess is as good as mine at this point for Cantlay. There’s way too much talent here to miss weekends in majors. Since early February, Cantlay has lost strokes on approach in two events: the PGA and U.S. Open. He gained nearly five strokes with his irons at the Rocket Classic three weeks ago. That spike got him into the top 25, but barely. Cantlay needs to close this major season on a high note and start getting his game in order for the Ryder Cup.

The 2019 Portrush leaderboard was covered in straight flushers of the golf ball. Spaun is a 2025 version of what you will need to contend among the dunes of the Dunluce Course. One solid start after another, don’t be surprised if the surprise U.S. Open champ is near the top of the leaderboard once again. One week after winning at Oakmont, Spaun shot 129 on the weekend at the Travelers. J.J.’s feeling it, and it is fun to watch.

Royal Portrush in 2019 was MacIntyre’s first moment on a major stage, and he finished sixth. MacIntyre is now a 30-1 bet, 9k on DraftKings and ranked 14th in the OWGR. Throw in a runner-up finish at Oakmont, and the Scot will be a major focus in Northern Ireland. He’s shown he can handle it, winning twice on the PGA Tour last year and once in his home country. Booby Mac might just match (or better) that T-6 we saw six years ago.

Fitzpatrick’s best finish in the Open was at Royal Portrush. The trending Englishman has been great of late, finishing fourth in Scotland for a third straight top-20s. His low-ball flight is a perfect fit for this championship. Throw in a solid short game and a European agronomy advantage, and we love Fitzy to make the most of this week. Henley had a shaky start to the 2025 major season, but Oakmont seemed to have reversed that trend. Throw in a fifth at Memorial right before the U.S. Open and runner-up finish at the Travelers right after, and Henley has a huge opportunity to better his fifth-place finish on a ball-striker’s ballpark. Over his last three starts, he is gaining an average of 10 strokes on the field. Last year at Troon was a surprise, I think we can plan on Portrush.

The question remains around Conner’s wrist. What started as a stellar major season for the Canadian was abruptly put on hold with a final round WD at Oakmont. Four solid rounds in Scotland have set the stage for Royal Portrush. Much like a modern Lee Westwood, Conners can contend at the Open on ball-striking. Here’s an example of my adapted approach on the power rankings. You cannot pick Åberg on talent alone. Åberg has played in seven majors and missed the cut four times, most recently the PGA at Quail Hollow and the U.S. Open at Oakmont. That trend is fueled by a struggling short game. When the conditions get more challenging, the Swede cannot keep pace around the green. Two top-seven results at the Masters are great, but Royal Portrush is LONG way from Augusta National.

Combined with his T-2G game, Griffin has always been a solid putter and possessed the ability to score. Trust me, it’s wild he’s ranked this high, but LOOK at the results. Lowry is our defending Royal Portrush champion. The 80-1 longshot defied all odds and captured the world’s attention by winning a major so close to home. Approximately 2.6 million men live on the wonderful green island, and one of them became the Champion Golfer of the Year after the championship had not been played there in 68 years. I’m giving Shane a substantial lift for that achievement. Outside the majors this year, Lowry has been effective with nine top-20s. Scott is a legitimate threat to win this championship. An impeccable driver of the golf ball, he will give himself more excellent approach looks than 90 percent of the field. Oh, and he has posted 22 top-20s in the last two years! Morikawa hasn’t missed a cut in a major since 2023 (The Open) and has been on the leaderboard in six of his last seven major starts. This past weekend in Scotland gave him some time to get acquainted with veteran caddie Billy Foster. The goal is to put together a game plan for Royal Portrush and use that elite iron play to contend again, building on his major championship record this year. The problem? Hope is not a strategy, and unless Morikawa moves past the media nonsense, another top 20 miss might be in store.

Golf’s current super strategist has yet to figure out the Open Championship. One can blame the weather last year at Royal Troon, but for a player of Bryson’s caliber, one top-30 result in seven starts is not very good. The books and bettors need to pay attention to DeChambeau because of his recent major record: two wins and nine top-10s in the last 21 starts, but Royal Portrush is far from a popularity contest. In any other major, DeChambeau is an automatic top four player. The slide to six is a reflection of his record and until he proves otherwise along the United Kingdom coastline(s) be warry of backing him.

Majors are mainly won on approach, and even when Hovland has struggled with his game, the iron proximity has never left. Hovland is going to win a major, and based on his career record, The Open makes perfect sense. Aggressive players benefit from slow links-style greens, and ball-strikers live on the leaderboards due to the wind and weather. Hovland always seems happiest when the heat is on and has proven it all year with three top finishes in the biggest tournaments.

Capturing the career Grand Slam has been a defining moment for McIlroy, but since he knelt on the 18th green at Augusta National, we have all been praying for him to come back. This was coming off a WD at the U.S. Open and two awful results at the Masters and the PGA. Since Troon, Rahm has been on a mission to win another major. Rahm finished 11th in 2019 at Portrush and is a much more complete player now. The driver will be a huge factor, and Rahm’s gained positively with his in EVERY start this season. Although that will set him up perfectly, it is Rahm’s ground game that will give him the third leg of his career grand slam. Since Valhalla, Scottie has finished outside the top 10 five times out of 25. Mother Nature will play a significant role at Royal Portrush, so please keep an eye on the forecast. I fear that’s one of two things that will keep Scheffler from the claret jug. His second kryptonite could come on the greens; Scheffler does not putt well in Scotland, and he’ll face the same agronomy in Northern Ireland. That being said, he still led the field at the Renaissance Club in strokes gained/total and finished eighth. So I guess the rest of the field is back to hoping he gets bad weather.

Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is a subject of continued discussion. The event’s official name, as explained in this op-ed by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson, is the Open Championship. But since many United States golf fans continue to refer to it as the British Open, and search news around the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to utilize both names in its coverage.
