Overview
One of the best mountains in the West also boasts a modern golf course. Gene and Casey Bates, who have partnered with Fred Couples and Johnny Miller on other designs, opened the Canyons course in Park City in 2014, which utilizes the surrounding mountainous terrain and large elevation changes up to 550 feet. Though the layout is short, measuring less than 6,100 yards and played at elevation, there’s no shortage of challenge from navigating rumbled, meandering fairways, avoiding big misses with a number of large runoffs and longer par 3s.

“Golf was most likely an afterthought at this world-class ski resort in Park City. It's like they built 18 holes where they only had room for about 14. It's most noticeable on the the front 9 that has a few funky holes with some steep rises and drops off the edge of the ski hill and several holes that wind along the side of the hill through condo and resort hotel developments. The back 9 is a bit more like a traditional mountain course as it winds through the flatter terrain around the base of the mountain without the extreme elevation changes. The course is very short, so distance off the tee is not going to be an issue. You'll need to have your short game dialed in to get in position to make a putt on the very smooth greens. The condition of the greens was excellent and a step up from the rest of the course."

“Missed opportunity here. While the conditioning is great the holes and course are very funky. They didn't give themselves enough land for a reasonable golf course, instead cutting narrow holes between the mountain and new condos. Buyer beware for stray golf balls coming at your condo. They should have either allotted enough land for a core concept golf course, or used the elevated extremes to design a sick par 3 course."
