Callawassie Island: Dogwood/Magnolia

Overview
Callawassie Island, formerly the Country Club of Callawassie and located northwest of Hilton Head Island, was among the first generation of courses Tom Fazio designed in the mid-1980s following his longtime partnership with George Fazio, his uncle. The club is set on a ubiquitously named island and features two nines that comprise the main course that our panelists evaluate for the Golf Digest rankings. Both circle out through the Lowcountry development with the last hole of the Magnolia nine running along the tidal marshes of the Colleton River and Callawassie Creek, and the last four holes of the Dogwood nine skirting tight along the marshes from the opposite direction. Both nines have undergone extensive renovations over the previous few years.

“The renovation was well done. The variety of the par 3s is noticeably better than before, and the work around the greens has opened up far more shot options than pre renovation. Perhaps the most dramatic changes involved bunkering. The removal of several out-of-place bunkers, the shrinking of certain bunkers, and the addition of new bunkers was intentional, strategic, and in many cases, frame the tee shot far better than before. The course is more playable for the higher handicapper without taking anything away from better players, which is exactly what this club needed. The angles are cleaner, the surrounds give you more choices, and the course feels more thought-out. A critique is that a few of the par 4s still run together a bit, especially off the tee, but overall the renovation moved the course in a great direction."

“This restoration really blew me away. The previous time I played, it was soft and you couldn't really play all the shots as intended with no roll out. This time it changed with firm and fast turf and fast putting conditions created a fun yet attackable challenge. The shot options were around on most tee boxes and if there wasn't an option off the tee it tended to be on the approach into the greens. The views along the marsh were great for its aesthetics while also exposing you to large gusts of wind. The bunkering was extremely consistent and played well into the distance of most that were playing the correct tees."
