Overview
Gone are all the Norway Spruce that once squeezed every fairway of Winged Foot West. It’s now gloriously open and playable, at least until one reaches the putting surfaces, perhaps the finest set of green contours the versatile architect A.W. Tillinghast ever did, now restored to original parameters by architect Gil Hanse. The greens look like giant mushrooms, curled and slumped around the edges, proving that as a course architect, Tillinghast was not a fun guy. Winged Foot West was tamed, somewhat, by Bryson DeChambeau in winning the 2020 U.S. Open that was played in September, but he was the only competitor to finish under par in his six-shot victory.

“There should only be 25 or so truly five star courses in the US. Winged Foot West is one of them. If you are fortunate enough to get the invitation make sure you go!!! The green complexes are tremendous and very demanding."

“Winged Foot has two things as good as any club in the world: First, the clubhouse is iconic stone with a slate roof. From every hole surrounding it, the clubhouse dominates the view, as it is hard to not stare and wonder at it. Second, the green complexes are simply incredible, requiring precision iron play if you want to score. Miss a green left or right and you are likely looking at bogey, double bogey or worse."

“Amazing golf course and history with this club. Top tier conditions and green complexes. The rough is the challenge off the tee boxes. Mostly a flat piece of property that becomes more interesting on the back nine."

“Great club, incredible conditioning and an amazing set of greens. I found the tee-to-green underwhelming however and the land, with a few exceptions on the back 9, was rather ordinary."

“Day #2 of this NY trip found us at WF on the West Course. A "flip-flop" incident at the bag drop started off our day on an interesting note as the starter took offense to one of my guests exiting the car. As others have said, the West is a "big boy" golf course with long holes, massive bunkers and tough, raised greens. The rough is also a killer and the heat / humidity in mid July made this walk even more punishing. Surprisingly the Saturday that we played, the fairways played very firm and fast which seemed strange due to the amount of humidity on the course. WF has some of best green complexes I have ever seen, and the elevation of the greens and surrounding bunkering is close to perfect. Not to be missed is the amazing locker room inside of the club house. While Winged Foot clearly deserves its Top 20 rating, check out the showers in the men's locker room...they are #1 in my book."

“One of the top A.W Tilighast course in the country set in the bucolic suburbs of NYC. Tilighast did an amazing job with a relative flat piece of property. The green complexes and inside 100 yards may be the most interesting and challenging in the country. The holes flow togther seemlessly and each shot requires thought due as being on the right side of the fairway is necessary to attack the pins on many holes. The back nine is special - Hole 10 is one of the best medium long par 3's I have played. No let up as each hole builds to one of the great finishing stretches in golf. I like that the par 5 16th holes is a great risk reward hole that is very scoreable before two powerful long par 4's which par is a very good score on each of those holes. The conditioning of the course makes the movement of the fairways and the beautiful undulations in the greens even more pronounced. Challenge at every turn, but very fun course which requires moving the ball both ways. One of the best test of golf in the Northeast."

“The West is a "big boy" golf course with long holes, massive bunkers and tough, raised greens. The rough is also a killer. According to the caddies, it was twice as high for the Open vs. what we experienced. Don't know how Bryson gouged his ball out of that rough."

“Fairways played very firm and fast which made the yardage shorter than the number. Par 5's play on the shorter side and are accessible in two. Good mix of par 4s with short and long holes. Some of best green complexes i have ever seen. The elevation of the greens and surrounding bunkering is very well done. They make a flat course look not flat."
