Overview
About an hour north of Las Vegas, this Jack Nicklaus design was a member of Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Courses ranking in 2011. Wide, generous fairways offer a variety of shot options, but undulating, sloping greens require precise approach play. Uneven lies in the fairway—plus an often-present wind in the valley—will also test your irons. The course debuted as No. 2 on Golf Digest’s Best New Public list in 2008, trailing only future U.S. Open host Chambers Bay.

“A good public course that is in the desert but built and plays like a course in a grassy terrain. Fun time."

“Very interesting. Difficult for a public course. Good variety of holes and shots required."

“Out of the way and out of the hustle and bustle of Vegas. Nothing around the course but desert. Lots of humps and bumps. Pick the correct tee and you will have a fun day. The greens can be diabolical if they are fast. Worth the 45-minute drive from Vegas to get away from the crowds."

“Great layout and a fun course to play. Scenic values of mountains are wonderful. Greens very difficult and undulating. Windy conditions make play difficult. Great set of par 3s to test you. Conditioning a struggle with greens needing some upkeep and multiple areas of missing grass in the green surrounds."

“Challenging course located in the desert of Southern Nevada approximately an hour northeast of Las Vegas. When played course was not in very good shape - fairways lacked definition due to poor or non-existent moving and bunkers were unplayable due to poor (i.e, none) maintenance and lack of sand causing the liners to be prevalent in almost every bunker. In fact, the course posted in each cart the existence of the poor conditioning in the bunkers and related linings and indicated a player was entitled to a free drop - go figure - in the bunker, if possible. Clearly this course does not have the budget to properly maintain a championship course. However, if you ignore the conditioning, this is a challenging course. While the fairways were fairly expansive, the layout of each provides options off the tee in terms of aggressive vs conservative. Additionally, bunkers located in the centers of fairways on 4 holes impact club selection and shot lines off the tees and 2 holes (5 and 15) require the player to navigate arroyos crossing the fairways in landing areas. Penalty areas (primarily water) come into play on 9 holes with the surrounding desert impacting play (both off the tee and into the green) on the other 9. There were no parallel holes on the course. The majority of the greens were elevated requiring approach shot carries to firm greens. Miss hit shots end up in deep faced green side bunkers and steep run off areas. Green contours were challenging yet fun to putt. With the elevated greens, natural terrain and penalty areas, shot making was tested extensively. It's too bad the course conditioning detracted from the enjoyment of playing the course."

“Just over 1 hr north of the Las Vegas strip in Coyote Springs . A large piece of property with no parallel fairways set in the middle of nowhere. A very challenging Nicklaus course with undulating greens and rolling fairways and uneven lies occur all over."

“Very difficult course from any set of tees. The greens are also severe. Several holes presented challenges that only a very good player would enjoy. It's a long drive from any city and not much fun."

“Lovely setting and well run operation, but the course itself is somewhat of a mish-mash of holes, many of which regular golfer will find extremely difficult. Not sure it is worth the drive."

“This club was meant to be a high end private course. Their loss is the public golfers gain. Jack Nicklaus did a remarkable job routing the course through some relatively flat land. Do not expect a big clubhouse. There is a double wide trailer that houses the pro shop and a small snack bar."
