“Playable course that is a view into how golf courses were built in the 1800's. Some great holes on the interior, with great use of hills."

“Shot options: This course has modest shot options, but the ones it has a very good (1/10/13/17), but a number of weak holes (3/7/8/9). It would be great if #1 were later in the round. ; Hole by Hole comments:Hole #1: My big issue with this hole is that it shouldn't be the first hole, it should be later in the back nine, particularly for match play. A person needing to win the hole would go at with driver and try to avoid the creek. But as it’s the first hole, few are going to go after it. ; Hole #2: Just need to hit a good shot to avoid front bunkers and fall offs on each side. ; Hole #3: Not much to this one, just keep the shot straight, bunkers on sides aren't friendly; Hole #4: Not sure why you wouldn't hit driver as far as you can. Requires strong 2nd shot that is blind. I would probably edge of the hill in front of 2nd shot, as it needs a really high low iron that seems a bit much to ask after such a strong drive. ; Hole #5: No shot option off the tee, as it makes no sense to hit longer than 240 off tee. Requires very good approach, as only 2/3 of green can have a pin on it with the false front. ; Hole #6: No reward for hitting longer drive, as this big steep hill in front. ; Hole #7: not much to the hole, don't go out of bounds and keep ball short of hole. Green has nice slope on it. ; Hole #8: not much to the hole, don't go out of bounds and keep ball short of hole. Green has nice slope on it. Almost exact copy of previous hole, except a slightly wider fairway and a bunker to avoid; Hole #9: Not much worry if drive it too far, as it will likely roll down hill, so not much in shot options off tee. Only thought is to keep approach straight. ; Hole #10: Decision to make whether want to hit driver up the gut and risk being on the hillside or down below, or risk a longer shot into a narrow green. Great shot options here. ; Hole #11: difficult shot, needs to be played straight, not much option though.; Hole #12: wide fairway with little risk, have to hit 2nd shot approach in right place, so some risk/reward there, green isn't too hard. ; Hole #13: decision between easy layup to blind 2nd shot on a tight green vs. risking a long bunker shot. This is awfully close to an Outstanding risk/reward hole. ; Hole #14: Need to hit a good shot, but no options here. Hole will cause the player a lot of stress trying to figure out where to leave the approach. ; Hole #15: Not much in shot options, and not sure there is much risk to going for it in 2, but blind 2nd shot will cause a golfer to think twice, at least the first few times playing the hole; Hole #16: about only hesitation will be the narrow entrance to green and slightly raised green if miss on either side. ; Hole #17: No thinking required off the drive, and modest risk to hitting close to green. The risk/reward is the green, which has some big slopes, have to control spin. ; Hole #18: a difficult shot that must be placed well, bunkers are deep. Not much in shot options. ; : Challenge: Not much challenge other than the 3 long par 3's in general, but would say that the slightly raised greens will cause a player to make sure the misses are in the front. ; Layout variety: Layout variety is quite good on the interior of the course, makes good use of the hills all over the place, but outside makes it closer to average. Could use 1 more longer par 4 (or just play 4 as a par 4). ; Aesthetics: The hills make it interesting, particularly on the back side, but the holes alone the fence (other than 10) are only ok. ; Conditioning: Firmness was good, but not great. Greens rolled fine, but not great. ; Character: This is the oldest course in MN, and some of the hole represent good character from that era, but a number of holes are quite bland and seem like afterthoughts (or just didn't have the room). ; Fun: I think the course can be enjoyed by most players, and scratch players can play it as a par 70."

“Love the use of the hill here. Unique routing with early par 3s and all the par 5s on the back."
