Overview
Midland Hills always suspected their course was designed by Seth Raynor in the early 1920s, but they had no records of what that course looked like. They could intuit what some of Raynor's original holes were, but the overall architecture had dulled and shrunk over the years. That changed in 2018 when superintendent Mike Manthey discovered a 1921 irrigation map hidden above the ceiling in his office. The drawing showed Raynor's vision for the course, including individual holes and bunkers, a roadmap that designer Jim Urbina used to recreate and sharpen the old templates like the Biarritz, Road and Eden. The improvements have helped vault the course into the Best in State rankings for the first time.

“This Seth Raynor design is draped over frequently rowing rolling hills, where flat stances are rare. Large greens feature strong slopes and well defined shelves, consistent with Raynor’s design strategies. The 3rd hole plays uphill, and then drastically downhill, to a Punchbowl green that is more bold in the front than in the back. The par-three 4th hole is a reminiscent rememberable Short hole, maxing out at 145, to a wide green that features two small shelves, offering highly difficult corner pin locations. The short par-four 8th plays over a large lake in a Cape-like orientation of the fairway, and the green sits very high on a hill, making the short approach shot intimidating and difficult to calibrate. Conditioning is rather good, with the exception of some uneven mowing in the rough, where it it’s clear they missed their mow lines. Many fairways have up-and-down movement, so catching the crest of a hill can add 10 to 30 yards to one’s drive on a number of holes. Stand out holes on the back nine include the 12th hole, a Biarritz with a large back pad, and a deep swell. There’s also the 14th hole, Alps, which plays as an uphill approach to a blind green, players often unable to see even the top of the 12-foot tall pin. What’s unique about Midland Hills as a Raynor design is that more greens slope off in unique ways, non-geometrical greens with contours that lead off the green into recovery areas, sometimes also bunkers. Speaking of unique, the par-three 16th Redan does not play or resemble most Redan holes. Its huge green is more oval-shaped with three huge mounds, that can technically feed to the back left, which is the lowest point of the green. Other than that, It’s a loose interpretation. Overall, a stellar design with lots of character and interesting aesthetics. Membership is unpretentious, rare for a Raynor course, and completely focused on golf."

“Fantastic Seth Raynor designed course with rolling fairways (lots of side hill lies) and fantastic green complexes that really add to the resistance to scoring and shot options."

“Golfers of all levels wont be disappointed if you get an opportunity to play this course in St. Paul. Great mix of tree lined fairways with rolling hills, challenging lies, and enough water to make you take notice. Accurate approach shots are a must as bail out areas are few and far between. The signature 14th hole with a sunken green is unique! Old school feel accentuated by some recent renovations. Impressive club house, with great food, and friendly staff everywhere - inside and out."

“A great local gem in MN. Lots of Seth Raynor template holes."

“One of the best courses in the twin cities. It's hard to find two holes that are alike. The hills and contours have been left in the fairways and you must take into account the roll outs. Greens are interesting and quick. The changes in the last year have made it even better with the thinning of the trees and green expansions. It can never go back to the original Raynor routing but you still have 15 of the original holes."
