“Overall, a solid course and one of the better public options in the Bay State, highlighted by outstanding conditions and interesting greens. The back nine stands out as the superior side with better variety, higher shot options and a better sense of place and scale. Holes 11, 13 and 16 were among my favorites. All three are uphill par-4s but all three present different, fun challenges across interesting land that players of all skill levels should enjoy. The front has some solid holes as well - I enjoyed the risk/reward options and scoring opportunities on holes 4-6, which were balanced by the stout challenge on holes 1, 3, 7 and 8 - but in general thought the routing seemed a little cramped (especially compared with the wonderfully open feel on the back nine) and there were some curious design choices made. There is a bit of a natural disconnect from the old holes to new given the land at the club's disposal to expand from 9 to 18. What’s unfortunate is that in an attempt to tie the sides together, a puzzling decision was made to create bunkers that look like puzzle pieces throughout the course - including on the original holes. The artificial look is unpleasing to the eye. I'd imagine it's also a time- consuming job to maintain them in this manner. Aesthetics here SHOULD be much higher, but I had a hard time reconciling how jigsaw puzzle-piece bunkers fit into the otherwise natural, rugged landscape. I would love to see a more natural presentation more befitting of the property. The routing does a nice job changing the golfer’s orientation from hole to hole. It’s not until the end of the round that the golfer plays consecutive holes in the same direction, but the quality and variety of these holes is strong. One thing that could be done from a course set-up perspective is to provide more variety on the par 3s. #3, #8 and #12 all played effectively the same yardage - about 220 - with what appeared to be a prevailing wind. Moving tees and pins around to provide a more varied and fun test would be welcome and the options are there to do just that. The highlight for me was the excellent conditions. I can’t recall playing a course in New England this early in the season that had as much fire in it as Miacomet. Fairways were firm, fast and bouncy. The sandy soil is ideal for reaching our conditioning standard and the grounds team here has done a standout job doing so. I recall playing the course about ten years ago in late October (prior to joining the panel) and being impressed with the quality of the conditions at that time, too. Clearly this is a strength of the course and deserves recognition and emulation by other superintendents. The thick undergrowth in the rough/natural areas looks like it must be a nightmare for pace of play during the summer and fall. My guess is the challenge would be higher in a couple months. Might make for some bloody legs as well, which could make the course much less fun. Even with the long grass yet to reach its peak season heights, the abundance of bunkers lining both sides of many fairways - along with the course's proximity to strong sea breezes - help to increase the challenge score."

“Fantastic links style course that was recently redesigned to add a second nine and blend into the first nine. Wind is almost always a factor, as is native grasslands. As the only public course on Nantucket, this is a must play for every visitor."
