“Vineyard Golf Club is a tremendous walk. The holes are smartly routed throughout the property, utilizing different angles to ensure the wind comes from all directions. Almost all holes offer a risk-reward option, whether off of the tee or on an approach shot, with a clear payoff for execution, but safety to a player who chooses the safer of the two options. There are a number of short par 4's that provide excitement at crucial moments throughout the round. Though the course is a bit hamstrung by its requirement of using no inorganic chemicals in its maintenance, the greenskeeping staff has the course as good as it could possible be using natural chemicals. If you can get here, do so."

“To put it simply, Vineyard Golf Club lacks the world class holes to make it a world class golf course, but it is blessed with many good holes, which makes it good, fun, and a well-deserved candidate course. The course presents players with generous landing areas throughout the round, helping to amplify the fun factor. The biggest challenge is near and on the greens, most of which skew small with distinct sections that help to emphasize the need for precise iron play. While it’s not the most strategic course, there are many holes on which finding the line of charm yields a considerable advantage over the player who opts for the more conservative line. The terrific 5th and the strong 8th are two holes that stand out in this regard. Shot options stood out as one of the strongest categories, with many strong risk/reward holes. The short 6th and standout 17th were among some of the other holes on which the more boldly played drive resulted in a better look at the green. The layout variety was not on the same level, although I thought the variety was strong enough to make for a quality test. The course is well-routed to constantly change orientation with the wind, and the gentle land movement makes for a pleasant walk, even though many of the holes lack the distinctiveness that the best courses with the best variety have. The aesthetics of the course are quite nice. It feels like a sanctuary with picturesque views around every corner. The course feels very much of its place. Conditions were good, but not quite bouncy enough to be great. I thought some of the closely mown areas around the green could have been a little tighter, but making them more forgiving could be an intentional choice designed to maintain the fun factor for higher handicaps. I’d by no means say that the conditions were subpar - but in comparison to some of the more highly rated courses I’ve played, it’s a notch below."

“Vineyard Golf Club flies under the radar. I didn't know what to expect going into this round, but I was very impressed by the architecture and the variety of shots required. Such a pleasant mix of short and long holes, funky green complexes and visual intimidation. To me, some of the standout holes are the par 4 6th, par 4 8th, the par 5 9th, and the par 4 14th. Each of these holes provide interesting shot options with neat land forms. The green complex on the 8th has a sublte diagonal ridge right in front of the green which is truly unique. For any sort of pitch shot short of the green, it creates a really interesting challenge and set of options. Great work by Gil Hanse that is very worthy of a high ranking spot in an already golf-rich state!"

“• Great walking course for the membership. Teeing areas and greens are close together and flow very nicely. • The course has subtle movements in slope, but you experience both highs and lows of the land on each side. • Fairways and greens were firm and springy and consistent throughout the course. • Greens were all different in terms of slopes, size, hazard protection and variation. • Greens have many slopes, elephant graveyards, swales, humps, bath tubs, and dips making it crucial on approach shot placement • With well variation greens, run off areas, fescue and protected bunkering, scrambling requires high imagination and skill to make up and downs when no in a correct spot. • Golf course has a lot of variation in green size, fairway slope, green and fairway hazard location which requires you to think on every shot on every hole. • Tee shots required shot shape selection and spin control on every hole. It wasn’t just a bomb driver course."

“Beautiful course with great facilities. A nice challenge for all abilities with tees stretching between 5500 and 7200 yards and generous fairways. Awesome greens and lots of risk reward shots make it a fun course. Walking only and caddies are $125, if you can score an invite from a member. Bonus: saw Barrack Obama on the course!"

“Originally designed in 2002 by Donald Steel, the course was for the most part, fully redesigned in 2005 by Gil Hanse. The course is on the island of Martha’s Vineyard and near Edgartown. A private course, that has a strong caddy program, where walking is highly encouraged. Service is top notch. This is a beautiful course, similar to those seen in the sandbelt courses in Melbourne, Australia. The course is in excellent condition, fairways are firm and fast and the greens are receptive and roll true. The dogleg holes all have large, penal bunkers, surrounded by fescue to discourage cutting the corners."
