Overview
Wayne Stiles, who in the 1920s worked with partner John Van Kleek on projects throughout the East, expanded Woods Hole’s original 9-hole course to 18 in 1919. It’s set over a gorgeous property on the southern tip of Cape Cod with a small aperture on the north end touching Quissett Harbor and Buzzard’s Bay where the green of the par-3 17th is set. Twelve holes play through a separate section of meadow, running through fields of fescue as the land dips and rises invoking top Massachusetts designs like The Country Club and Essex County Club. In 2023 designer Kyle Franz completed a long-range renovation plan that greatly enhanced the visuals across the course through the addition of new and newly expanded bunkers, slightly enlarged greens and new short grass runoffs. Though not long at just over 6,000 yards, the layout continues to demands accurate driving and controlled approaches into a set of small, tilted greens that spill into Franz’s gorgeous hand-crafted hazards.

“Woods Hole started as a nine-hole course in 1899, expanded to 18 holes in 1919 by Wayne Stiles & John Van Kleek, and was renovated by Kyle Franz in 2023. The course is relatively short (6114 from the tips) due to land restrictions (i.e., most tee boxes are as far back on the course grounds as possible). Constant wind, relatively narrow approach angles (need to be on correct side of FW), and both FW and green firmness defend the course. B placement (enhanced significantly by Franz reno in 2023) means anywhere you want to land your tee ball is likely to find a B. Also massive elevation changes add to each hole’s individual shot options and challenge (e.g., #17). Spectacular views of Vineyard Sound from 17 and 18 tee. Exceptionally pleasant staff and membership."

“Wood’s Hole is a true throwback club that fits very well with the elite old school tracks of Massachusetts. It’s a very short course on a small piece of land, yet somehow every inch is packed with interest. The routing has some quirks, including crossing a fairway to get from green to tee, but the genius of it far outweighs any faults. It’s a traditional 2 9-hole loops, working away from the clubhouse and bay. It culminates with a gorgeous bay view for 16 and 17, before heading home. The land movement is extreme, with many similarities to its cross land contemporary Eastward Ho!. Huge elevation changes and slopes, blind shots, and side hill lies await. Finding the crest of hills can add lots of yardage and help reduce blind shots. The greens have lots of internal contours to create variety in the short game and on approach. The conditions are very solid, the greens smooth and the rough tough, but still a challenge. The bunkering is visually gorgeous, but also the placement is strategic. You will have to take them on for the best angles. The course is rarely penal, you almost always have a chance to recover and use the green contours to your advantage."

“Woods Hole fits plenty of quirk and challenge into a 6100 yard layout. This Stiles and VanKleek classic has excellent rolling land accentuated by wide fairways and rugged bunkers. Woods Hole's variety in hole lengths and shapes demands a replay (or several) to experience all of the available angles and avenues."
