“Nantucket GC is the modern private effort on the island of Nantucket, and this Rees Jones design was recently spruced with re-edged bunkering. Unfortunately for those looking for traditional golf values, NGC is the polar opposite of island neighbor Sankaty Head GC. Nantucket is a golf course of excess, deep bunkers, deep fescue, and penal, elevated greens with deep fall-offs on at least one side of every green. In a vacuum, the course is ok, but much of its strategy was bulldozed into the land, as the first 2/3 of the course turns this way and that around heavy fills and cuts conjured by the the hand of man. 100 years ago at Sankaty, the brambles were cleared by hand with much difficulty, hard work that was rewarded with the reveal of sublime contour underneath. When presented with the same land at NGC with a much simpler task of using machines to reveal subtle contour, the full site was scraped flat, then built up from scratch. Traditionalist architects today scour the globe for a site like at Nantucket Golf Club, and this one was scraped clean of contour first...sad. The course shines most in the stretch from 13-17, when features seem to hug the already-existing grade a bit more. Unfortunately, it's too little too late to save it. Barring a full blow-up and redesign someday (see: Vineyard GC!), NGC will always be the island's third-best golf course, if not fourth."
