Overview
Gil Hanse’s Black Course at Streamsong, Golf Digest’s Best New Public Course of 2018, sits a mile south of the resort’s Red and Blue courses, with its own clubhouse and personality. Reshaped from a decades-old phosphate strip mine that produced tall spoil mounds, Hanse provided strategic character by building a hidden punchbowl green at nine, dual putting surfaces at 13, incorporating a meandering creek on the par-5 fourth and a lagoon cove to guard the 18th green. Both the putting surfaces and the chipping areas surrounding them were grassed in MiniVerde, and today both are mowed at a single height, resulting in some of the biggest, most complex greens found on our national ranking along with Landmand, No. 155. One Streamsong insider calls the Black greens “polarizing;” we call them tremendous fun.

“Designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, this inland links course is perhaps the most fun of the three Streamsong Resort courses with its huge fairways, massive undulating greens, and its distinctive signature hole #9 the punchbowl. Many purists eschew this course, calling it gimmicky, but there is no mistaking the wow factor."

“I came to Streamsong most excited about playing Black Course, and I left Streamsong loving this course the most! Such a beautiful track with so much sand, and large green complexes that made the round so challenging yet fun!"

“Two number 13 greens. Very large greens because the greens surrounds were grassed with Mini Verde Bermudagrass that is maintained at greens mowing height. Greens will be converted to TifEagle Bermudagrass and the greens surrounds with Celebration Bermudagrass in the not too distant future. Only 2 mowing heights: the greens and everything else. Playing firm and fast."

“Huge driving areas with a lot of very sloped greens makes for a fun round. Par 5s are mostly reachable. Good mix of par 3s"

“The Black Course at Streamsong is a great compliment to the Red and Blue. It brings you to another section of the property and feels massive. The landing zones on both the fairways and greens are plenty. You may feel confident hitting a lot of greens, but you may be let down by the number of 3 putts given their massive size. The course definitely allows variations in shot which is quite a treat."

“Interesting course built in a fairly benign strip site. I found the course fun to play and some of the most interesting greens you’ll find anywhere. It’s clear the resort owners wanted the architect to build greens unlike the other courses on property."

“The Black course is dominated by its green complexes, which are incredibly large and contain some significant features and undulations. The balance of the course is effectively setting up how players interact with and manage them. While the scale can create some interesting shot options around the greens, playing to the greens is relatively straight forward. The greens themselves are generally multiple greens in one separated by large undulations, so playing to the correct part of the putting surface is strategically important."
