GIVE AND TAKE Ladera holes like the par-4 14th contrast wide fairways with exacting greens.

Overview
Ladera breaks the mold of desert golf in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. The design does not incorporate unnatural water features, it’s not lined by palm trees, and it’s not constrained by housing considerations. Instead, it is a beautiful and varied expression of what desert golf can be in its most natural form, though nothing about it is natural. The 300-acre site slopes 140 feet from the high point near the Santa Rosa Mountains across once-level land that was formerly lemon groves and mango farms. Hanse and Wagner propped up the low side of the property to reorient sightlines over the valley floor toward the eastern Mecca Hills and moved millions of cubic yards of earth to create each particle of golf.
Ladera’s fairways are generous, 60 to 100 yards with no formal rough, but strategy abounds with options to play to wide parts of the fairway though the best approach angles and lines-of-sight are reserved for those who skirt the boundaries of the hazards. Even completely straight holes, such as the par-5 seventh, are full of options with staggered bunkers and a treacherous side slope short of the green. The greens reveal a tremendous variety of sizes and forms, some modestly contoured like the enormous saucer third and others a pattern of ridges and falling tiers (the 14th). But the most distinctive features at Ladera are the attractive dry gullies and arroyos that Hanse, Wagner and their team cut through the site emulating sandy, eroded vegetative lows that water would rush through during rare periods of heavy rain. The excavated sand was used to create sweeping elevation changes and to prop up greens like the par-3 fourth, the altar-like 15th, the par-3 16th and the par-5 17th that hangs over the edge of a deep arroyo.

“Mr. Marchand, the Pro, couldn’t have been any nicer. He spent about an hour showing me around and explaining what the owners have done and what are in the future plans. As for the course, with the routing, the bunkering, the undulating greens and the absence of palm trees and water, really sets the course above any course in the desert. Looking forward to coming back here in 4-5 years to see how the course has matured."

“From the drive in through the lemon groves, to the golf course and facilities, Ladera feels like a golf oasis. Hanse did a remarkable job creating a bold, exciting, and thought-provoking golf course. On the surface, Ladera has tons of width, and almost nowhere to lose a golf ball. However, it's got plenty of bite with severe runoffs, green contours, and some punishing bunkers. The shot options at Ladera are really phenomenal. So many holes pose a variety of decisions depending on the day and the pin location. For example, the par 5 10th hole offers a play over the cross bunker from the tee, and a risk reward second shot over a large bunker/waste area. However there is an easy 3 shot route that allows shorter hitters to navigate the hole with minimal risk. One of the most exciting features on the course is the 12th green complex. A par 3 that can stretch past 250 yards has a green with a biarritz-like feature toward the rear, with a giant feeder slope covering the back of the green, letting balls hit low and running collect back toward the green. With a back pin, this slope offers a number of options from around the green as you can trickle one over the ridge or play off the back slope and let the ball come back down toward the pin. It's rare to find this type of shot option on a par 3...what a cool feature. The short par 4 15th plays a hair longer than 12, but forces different decisions and shots. A drive up by the green can be rewarded with a simple pitch, however a miss left (where everything funnels) offers one of the most difficult 30 yard pitches you can imagine - up a 15 foot wall to a shallow green. After winding up there, you will think twice about hitting driver off this tee. I found Ladera to be approachable, nuanced, and challenging...a really great example of how modern architecture blends so many great qualities."

“This is the speakeasy of golf courses in Palm Springs area. Hidden amongst a lemon grove farm and void of structures, trees, rough, and water. Not allot of stress off the tee but green structures are outstanding."

“Ladera occupies a stunning site at the base of the Santa Rosa mountains with 200 feet of elevation change across the property. The course features broad scale, wide landing areas, but substantial strategic interest from tee to green. The use of "lines of charm," angles and diagonals is particularly effective at Ladera. Green complexes offer an endless array of interest. Some are big and bold with huge slopes, while others are more nuanced. Bunkering, hazards and recovery shots are also tremendously varied. The hand-sculpted arroyos and other features at Ladera are beautiful... they could be mistaken for natural features, which is a difficult feat pulled off well. Ladera is a unique and delightful golf course."

“This new Gil Hanse course is built on 300 acres and is unlike anything else in the California desert. It’s a big course with generous fairways but challenging shots into the greens. All five par 3’s are stunning to look at and fun to play. There are also a couple unique shot par 4’s. Number 15 is especially challenging with a thin raised green and steep drop offs on both sides. Great views of the nearby mountains and valley. This is a first class operation in every way. The 9 hole short course is also great fun and in perfect condition like the big course."

“Not your average Palm Springs area course and was somewhat surprising to experience the routing through the terrain of the site as well as the views one experiences looking out over the valley to the east. Short, medium, and long hole variety is found at this course in the par 3's, par 4's, & par 5's. The routing by Hanse provides incredible directional variety with the par 3's and par 5's going all different directions throughout the round. Front 9 is unique in that there are three par 3's, three par 4's, and three par 5's. Beautiful aesthetics with not only the views of both mountains and the valley but also with the bunkering and the desert landscape that frame the holes. Will test every club in one's bag if the right tees are selected for the skill level of a player."
