Wyndham Clark explains the hilarious (and totally understandable) reason for why he used to hate Baker Mayfield
Ten years is long, longgggg time. A decade ago, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were still years away from winning their final majors, Tour Championship match-play seemed as far-fetched as artificial intelligence and Wyndham Clark? He was a redshirt senior playing for the Oregon Ducks … who just so happened to hate Baker Mayfield.
Fast forward a decade, Clark is now a two-time U.S. Open champion and has come around on the Oklahoma Sooners’ Heisman winner. Following Clark’s victory at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday, he joined the Pardon My Take podcast where he was asked about his old grudge with Baker. After a brief pause, Clark decided to tell the story and boy are we glad he did. Check it out.
WYNDY! YOU DOG! Like Big Cat, we assumed his old tweet had something to do with Clark being an Oklahoma State Cowboy before transferring to Oregon. At no point did we think it was because Wyndham Clark’s college girlfriend had cheated on him with Mayfield.
“I’m trying to decide if I should tell the story,” Clark explained. “Screw it, I don’t care. People already hate me … My girlfriend at the time cheated on me with Baker Mayfield … I’m actually a Baker fan now. I think he’s a homie. You know, that’s your initial response, like screw that guy. But really it’s like screw you know [indicating his ex-girlfriend]. So I’m a Baker fan now, but that’s where it came from.”
“I actually hope this is a bro moment for us to be like ‘Oh bro, I didn’t know, my bad. She never told me.’” Clark continued. “And I’d be like ‘It’s all good, we’re homies, let’s play golf!’”
Beef squashed? Only time will tell, but either way, it makes for a heck of a story.
