WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational 2020 odds: Is it time to buy low (again) on Dustin Johnson?

Golf’s busy summer continues with the PGA Tour’s first world-golf-championship event since the PGA Tour restart. The WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational 2020 will be held this week at TPC Southwind with 45 of the world’s top-ranked players teeing it up in Memphis.

Though some will be disappointed with Tiger Woods’ absence, many of the world’s top players are here, including new World No. 1 Jon Rahm, who tops the odds board, followed by

Rory McIlroy (10-1), Justin Thomas (11-1) and Bryson DeChambeau (12-1). Such a stacked field is yielding some higher-than-usual odds on some other of the world’s best. Maybe this is the week to buy low on Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood or Dustin Johnson, all uncharacteristically priced above 30-1 after respective missed cuts and a dubious withdrawal in DJ’s case at last week’s 3M Open.

On the surface, most will easily pass on DJ’s chances, following his first-round 78, a reported back injury, which came after back-to-back rounds of 80s at the Memorial Tournament. But the long-hitter did just win the Travelers Championship less than a month ago, and his odds were similar that week. And before this event became a WGC, DJ won at TPC Southwind twice (2018 and 2012) and has two other top-10 finishes. Those results came in weaker fields than this, but still shows the course fits DJ's eye as he looks to rebound from the past few weeks.

Recent history displays that TPC Southwind will be a tough but fair test, and a worthy tuneup for next week’s PGA Championship at Harding Park. Koepka edged Webb Simpson by three shots here in 2019, and the reigning PGA champion could use a strong week to secure his place in the FedEx Cup playoffs (Koepka currently sits at 155th in the standings).
