The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am draws plenty of attention for its location and its celebrities. But the coolest stories don't have to come from the biggest names teeing it up in the amateur portion of the event.
Take Thursday, when Rory McIlroy and his father, Gerry, each birdied the 18th hole at Spyglass Hill to close out their first round in style. Gerry went first from about 20 feet, and Rory followed from about half that to create a nice family moment -- and probably save Rory, who shot an opening 68, from taking a little ribbing at dinner. It wasn't quite Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Jr. hitting back-to-back home runs, but it was still pretty neat.
